If I buy this
Does that mean I can listen to my music stored on it through my squeezeboxes without having a pc on?
And Could I plug this into it or rip the drive out of this and whack it in there?
no persoanel experience of squeezebox setups so wont comment on that but familiar with diy nas setups
no experience with either that drive or nas either..
but in theory you should be able to rip that drive out and put it in the nas.
but note you will likley void your warranty on the drive, which leads me to the point of posting, i have heard there to be reliability issues with thoose elements drives, not sure which versions/drives but you might want to check reviews.
i've ripped samsung drives out of a freecom external hdd just fine and also a verbatim external drive with a 2tb samsung and put them in my nas server just fine.
Don't know about that particular NAS but I can listen to music on my wireless tablet without any PC on. The NAS has some software that does all that, it just needs plugging into a router.
I have a synology NAS that lets me use my squeezebox without a pc - and I can control it from my Android phone. So the concept of using a NAS with a squeezebox without a pc is fine - it is just a case of if you can get it to work with that particular NAS.
I'm sure if you google that particular model, you will be able to find out if you can get squeezebox server to run on it. In fact, this suggests that you can. Not bad for the price!
Cheers, I'm not too techie so I don't want ot buy something that doesn't do what I want or is a PITA to make it do so.

Yes. Check out the Slimdevices forum, there's a load of posts from people who use these. I think they work fine just not very fast so you have to be a bit careful on what you ask it to do.

In theory yes but you could also just plug your hard drive into the USB port.
Cool, on HUKD I've been told the NAS would want to format the drive, I guess I can at least plug it into my pc when I rip cds.
Looks like a "go" project!
The interface looks a lot more user friendly than the ReadyNAS I use. Looks like a good find. 😉
...I guess I can at least plug it into my pc when I rip cds.
Or rip the CD's on your PC and move them to the NAS over the network.
Some NAS boxes can be a bit particular about certain drives
check to see if there's a compatibility listing anywhere
Milkie I should have said - it has slow transfer speed apparently.
One point I found, is that if you can used wired connections between NAS and router, then this helped speed up delay between changing songs etc. My squeezebox is also connected to the router via LAN cable, instead of using the wifi, just to make it as reliable as possible.
You may want to put your NAS hidden away from your router, so the LAN over mains power devices can be a simple solution that allows you to use cables instead of wifi.
The NAS will probably want to format the drive if you install it inside the box. If you connect it via USB then it wont (i'm assuming the NAS will run OK with out any drives installed though). Is there already a load of data on the drive?

You wont need to plug is in, it'll be connected to your wireless network and appear as just another drive in windows explorer for you to move stuff into. To be honest i'm not sure what is stopping you ripping cds on your computer straight to the NAS drive?
Says it does squeezebox server which is nice.
The speed is more likely to be dependent on the hardware than the driveso putting the bigger drive in probably won't speed things up but you will at least get thebigger drive
I've had problems plugging western digital USB drives into other NAS devices before (assuming you wanted to go down the USB route). It does seem a bit random though as other WD USB devices (non powered ones) have worked. Bit of suck and see I'm afraid
The zyxel box looks lovely and quiet though

Cheers Rik, seems a minefield.
It is indeed a minefield. I just bought a ReadyNas Duo V2 to run my new squeezebox only to find that logitech haven't written the software for it yet! Luckily there is a beta version on the slimdevices forum which seems to work ok prior to the official software coming out. Bit peed really as logitech only really recommend the ReadyNas. Easy to set up once you get the idea mind. Got mine from Dabs.com by the way as it had a £10 off offer at the time.
I have my music on a Buffalo Linksation 1Tb, physically connected to my router.
My Pure Evoke Flow can access it through wireless and play.
The only problem seems to be the Evoke doesn't send the right signal to the NAS to trigger the auto-on from standby, which is something I need to look into.
I have a readyNAS Duo running squeezecentre, talks to my 2 squeezeboxes really well.
it was a doddle to set up.
On another forum, someone said this, which I don't understand, but have a gut feeling is bahd...
Doesn't this have semi-broken DLNA functionality the same as the single drive, better processor NSA-310? (ie. it's necessary to do a full database rebuild to detect new media)If so, then if that's your intended use I'd be extremely cautious making a purchase. But for any other use...
I'll have a wild stab in the dark, and interpret that thusly:
NAS has a database of what's on it, which would be seen by your Squeezebox via UPNP.
That database is only updated during rebuild (when NAS is shutdown/restarted?)
Therefore, any new music you put on the NAS won't be seen on the network until after NAS is rebooted.
There is a 47% chance that all the above is complete bullshit 🙁
Regarding ripping the drive out of the external drive, when I was setting up my NAS I thought about doing this, but doing a bit of research, apparently some of these drives have different control boards on, so don't have standard SATA or IDE connectors.
OK, possibly a stupid question...
Will this accept my old 5.25 Sata?
No it won't..
It takes.. 2 internal - 3.5"
Will this accept my old 5.25 Sata?
SATA drives will be 3.5" or 2.5"
Bah, thought so!
Cheers again Milkie 🙂
How does Raid 1 work on a single drive such as this...would setup just partition the disc into 2 x 250GB and run it that way?
I'd like some form of backup, but Raid 1 this way seems like a bit of a waste of time if the disc fails.
Looking at the specs of that drive Haze, it seems to imply you put an external eSata drive on as the 'mirror', there's not much point in having one drive split into two mirrors as if the drive goes bang you've lost everything.
Raid 1 is good, but only for disk failures. If you want to get a version of a file from 2 months ago (say, you've deleted something, or overwritten it) then backups are useful.
Thanks, makes sense.
I might go for the NAS310 then, I have a 250GB external knocking around somewhere that I can use for backing up the more important stuff. And I'm under that threshold at the moment anyway.
Can always upgrade that to a 500 at a later date when and if needed.
Got there eventually!
Bit late on this but I use a WD WorldBookNZ 2x2TB RAID-1 which runs Twonky media server out the box as its DLNA server. You can http into it and configure it as you wish.
Main problem i had that took a wee bit of fiddling was the track tagging for lossless, i use FLAC but have to set the DLNA to display in a certain way otherwise my Uniti doesn;t like the data. Now that it is setup its been faultless. I rip CD's to it using DBPowerAmp Free. Fast and large which are two good features.
