I got some 25mm internal width rims but how narrow can I go with the tyres without harming any kittens? Do 1.35 cross tyres work?

CX tyres will be fine - I'd avoid going narrower than 30mm due to the risk of rim strike / 'railing' a rim i.e. the exposed edge of the rim catches on an edge
