Looking at setting up a photography business.

I dont want to use my name either.

I am pretty stumped on names though as I dont want any cliche or common names how ever I still want it to be apparent to what I would be doing.

I live on the Isle of Wight and would focus on news media for news stories and undertaking freelance hire for things such as family portraits and weddings.

I would like something possibly nautical themed also if possible?

What sort of ideas can you guys come up with that are serious.

Your Name + Photography.

If you try to get smart then people either wont get it or will think it's pretentious.

I think I'd find the idea of being tied to a small location to be a negative. It's not like Paris, London or even Stockport..

It looks like you want a lot of local business so <postcode> photography could be a winner, something like "PO30 Photography" ?

For news I would generally avoid using the word photography in the title, especially if you are going to send stories in as well, makes you sound like a portrait photographer, something like Wight Media, Isle Media, or use a single non specific word, especially if you want to use it as an umbrella name for other aspects of your photography, think of other news photo agencies, Alpha, Rex, Retna, Apex, Gamma, Dragon, i-images etc. Some photographers I know who supply to newspapers simply send it in with their name on it, the papers will very quickly cotton on to who you are as I doubt there are many people on the island supplying photos to them. If supplying to the papers you will put your name on it anyway for the byline, something like Joe Bloggs/Wight Media.

As an example I just moved to Wales, on my first job there, there were two other photographers, one from Wales Media and one from Media Wales, sort of says it all really.

I would not go with a nautical theme unless you are going to be sending in lots of sailing pictures.

Spyglass Images? Foc'sle Fotos?

Although you might have to beware of locals automatically associating "Spyglass" with the Ventnor pub of the same name, I doubt they have copyright on the word.

Also, there are a few well-established nautical photography specialists on the island, esp in Cowes, so unless you want to try and compete directly with them, or give potential customers the idea that you do, then the nautical themed name might not be such a good idea.

Available Wight Imagery ??

The thing with using Wight is it just sounds like a name to most people. And it's probably going to get lost in a sea of Google search results.

My business name came from putting my wife's forename and my forename into an anagram maker and choosing one of the hundreds of results.
