Was involved in a hit-run earlier this week, whilst driving my wife's car, where the other driver hit me & drove off.
They've not reported it to the police either.
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to get their reg number so as I'm a named driver on her policy the claim is going through her insurance.
Question is, do I need to notify my insurance of the accident too?
The default is to inform them, if they don't care then nothing lost. You'll certainly have to mention it at renewal time. If you want to be totally legit then it is best to give them a call. They may want to charge you for the privilege, though
Question is, do I need to notify my insurance of the accident too?
Yep,
They'll know if you don't as insurance companies share accident details with each other on a central database, don't they?
My understanding is that you have to declare any accidents or claims that you made regardless of which policy you made them on.
They’ve not reported it to the police either.
What do you mean by "either"? You have reported it to the police, I hope?
I agree with other posters, you should tell your insurer.
Will let my insurers know. Yes, I have reported it to the police.
To weigh in with actual similar experience.
Wife was hit by another car in hers, their fault and had their details though. Anyway, she's named on my insurance, so I let them know too. They record it, but didn't make a difference.
I notified my insurance at renewal after an accident as a named driver on another policy.
Is your wife a named driver on your car? I ended up having to take my Dad off my insurance as saying I'd been involved in an accident in the past year and he'd had a claim in the past year (the same incident) increased the premium too much.
