They’re safety connectors or release so that folks don’t strangle themselves should they get caught on rotating machinery or shaggy things - practically all lanyards come with them - often just called ‘safety lanyard’

It just allows the thing on the end of the lanyard to be removed. It doesn't stop you getting strangled if either a machine or a person grabs the lanyard itself.

Lanyards should have a safety breakaway clip in them, one that breaks apart with far less pull than that one.

....Rotating machinery and things that dangle......

(Just making a statement, dont actually know what the OP use is though)

Just to clarify these are being used so i can swap camera's and lights between bikes/helmets but not have to unravel/remove the lanyard each time as each bike/helmet will have its own lanyard attached and i just need to clip on the camera/light to whatever bike/helmet id be using

I have to wear a proper break away lanyard for work (work with large industrial machinery)

Our company state they must have to have a break away clip at the top of the lanyard so its at the back of your neck, so if the lanyard gets caught in a machine the whole lanyard will come off your neck easily and not leave anything else around your neck that could drag you into the machine
