Which makes it funnier, one of her staff set her up. And, let's be honest, you would if you could.

To the wider, more important point though, even by the woefully low standards of the current crop of ministers, she is spectacularly unqualified for the job

That's not true, not at all.

By the current standards her being spectacularly unqualified makes her exceptionally qualified for the job in hand.

They're only there to do as they're told and make Boris look like the least worst option. Sadly they're doing a good job at both.

In this instance that is a bit mean, most people who don't live in the m62 corridor - probably including the one who wrote the speech, I don't think it's likely to be a stitch up - won't have a clue or care there is more than one "rugby".

It's not like she confused it with cricket.

Dorries, born in Liverpool

The word you're looking for is spawned.

But yes, point taken.

So far as clueless goes mind I doubt she realises they have two* football clubs. That said I don't think most Liverpool or Everton fans would admit that have two.

*obviously rather more than that but you get the point.

She's the chuffing minister of sport. And the speech writer employed to give her something to say is employed to write for the chuffing minister of sport. Sport, not defence or health. The easy gig. The one that is simpler to get right. And she still ****s it up.

A spot of Rumsfeld feels appropriate here.....this mob have so many unknown unknowns that they don't know that they don't know, it makes them flipping scary.

They don't have any unknown unknowns, everything is an unknown, so it's easy to know they don't know it.

She’s the chuffing minister of sport

Yes, true, and I'm not suggesting that it's a perfectly reasonable thing for her not to know, more that it's not incomprehensible that she wouldn't. Let's face it, on a list of things that prove she isn't qualified for the sport part of her brief not knowing the different codes of rugby isn't even going to feature. She's then got three other distinct portfolios in her brief to be equally inadequate for.

And the speech writer employed to give her something to say is employed to write for the chuffing minister of sport.

And is likely not a pick of the current govt but a departmental staffer. Probably one qualified to be a senior CS by virtue of which school they went to.

I don't live in the M62 corridor and I know the differences between the two codes, I don't really follow either. As has been stated above she's minister for culture and sport, better she remains silent and thought a fool. . .

If you want to see mean have a read of Chris Patten's recent interview in the Guardian.

Me too, for several reasons. Not the least of which is that she's so thick that it must hurt.

But this is the whole point of the modern libertarian hard-right - they find the least suitable candidates, give them a hotline to whichever opaquely funded think tanks are en-vogue and put them in a cabinet post. We saw it in the Hungary, the US and now the same thing is happening here. The only people I can think of that are even thicker than Dorries are her constituents, who've kept her in a job since 2010.

It's not just "she doesn't understand her brief", though that's no surprise considering the channel 4 stuff. It's "here is a little story I will tell you about how normal and human I am when enjoying your sport, which is clearly completely made up and was provided by a scriptwriter". Dorres is from the post-truth world where there's literally no value placed on truth or lies or reality or not. I understand why people lie for a reason but she just lies because there's a y in the day. Is her name even Nadine? Who knows. Maybe someone just handed her a bit of paper that said "You are now nadine dorres" and she read it out.

See, this is what I never understood with our politics.

We can argue that Dorries is thick as mince, and we can point at laugh that when the Minister for Sport was asked at a sporting event for her favourite moment in that sport she regaled them with a tale from an entirely different sport. But.

Why is she in that position in the first place? Why are any of them in the positions they're in? Surely it make sense to have ministers who have knowledge and at least a vague interest in their field rather than (say) a transport minister who was shocked to discover that ports are slightly important to a goddamn island nation? And then when they just might start to have an inkling of what they're doing we have a reshuffle and everyone gets new jobs?

Is it just me? Am I missing something here, or is it absolutely barking? You wouldn't do it in a corporate environment, rock up one day and go "right, Sales, you're now in Engineering. Engineers, you're all in Accounts. Accountants, you're off to HR." I admit I'm a late starter to the wold of politics but it makes absolutely no sense to me.

Why is she in that position in the first place?

I posted a video in the Boris thread that explains this. Essentially its Boris and his paymasters surrounding Boris with people that can be controlled, mount very little actual challenge to Boris, and exaggerate his own ability.

It’s less about being actually qualified for the job.

If the video suggested anything of the sort it's propagandist nonsense.
This has been gong on since before Boris was a twinkle in his great grandfather's eye and it'll be going on long after we're rid of him.

The simple fact is they're there to provide leadership and direction, not knowledge.
This is why most of the staff are permanent but the heads change.
The more partisan and less knowledgeable they are the more likely they are to force through policies based on party ideology than on what might actually work. Leave them in position too long and they might actually grasp that flights to Rawanda are not a good idea and unlikely to be successful so not implement those policies.
The policies are however what your voters want and they by and large don't care if the HO functions day to day so policy is whats important.

The only post where this isn't true is the chancellor because if you're seen to break the economy by your own voters you lose the election.

It's the same case with those twenty million pound a year executives who golden parachute from barclays to tesco or wherever despite the shares having collapsed at the end of their tenure and knowing nothing about supermarkets except they're full of little people.

This is the tory party and the civil service, that means leadership amounts to "do this or you're all fired" (gets done) "excellent, suzy, you keep your job, the rest of you are fired, suzy I expect no reduction in output or you're fired."

Regrettably this is also the model in a large number of businesses.

As for direction its simply party line. Poor Dorries and several of her colleagues have a department where the party line either doesn't exist so they're left to dither and fluff and look incompetent whilst ensuring the department looks like a pointless distraction (things at which Dorries is very good) or is do nothing/poke with a stick until it breaks like the health Secretary.

Mad Nad stepping down at next election.

Named in Johnsons resignation honours list - no need to bother with trifling nonsense like  elections in future, got a job for life in the Lords.

Strictly speaking a peerage is immediate - so her and the other MPs he's given peerages to were supposed to join the Lords immediately and there should be at least 4 by-elections on the cards at the moment. But.... it seems like rules are for people other than Johnson and his pals

Dories in the lords is just another reason to abolish it

Her seats quite safe, huge majority, one of the few tory MPs likely to survive an election were it tomorrow.

I expect she knows that she'll never get near cabinet again and the Lords is money for nothing, plus she can do her TV show easier

Will Johnson take her much safer mid-beds seat tho?

It's really not very ceremonious language when you consider it's coming on behalf of a public authority. The letter is, on the face of it, polite, but the message is clearly inviting her to consider ****ing off at the first opportunity.

It’s incredible that there are still Rules/Laws allowing the PM to appoint anyone he/she wishes to the Lords, and gives no reason (25 yo aide).

And that they get a PMs pension, for being in the job for 50 days (Truss). And give massive Contracts to people who cannot deliver them, yet they still got paid (covid). It is very near, if not corrupt. The greatest Democracy? I dont think so. And it isnt just the Tories, all Parties are at it.

I assume she is going to get the election just before the conference. So resign early September.

Withdrawing the whip is pointless. Thats only useful in threatening people who want to stand for election again.
They may also have rules about when the whip can be withdrawn and "throwing a hissy fit and not actually resigning" is unlikely to be on the list.

sunak's comments fall a very long way short of the robust criticism dorries deserves.
It's yet another example of sunak's weakness and pathetic inability to demonstrate leadership.
Why has it taken him nearly two months to say anything abour dorries failure to truck off?

We are quite close to this being in Mid Beds. The Flitwick letter is quite mild as it had to be a collective response from the council. We are in a neighbouring town but didn’t do a letter as the town council wouldn’t agree to it. My wife, as Mayor, was interviewed about it on radio 4 on Sunday. What she said was mild but she is constrained by Mayors being neutral. However she got in a plug for the local Repair Cafe. It has forced the local conservative association to speak out against her for the first time. His words are mild as Rishi’s but it’s still a step in the right direction

There are 2 theories about why she didn’t go. The first is that being an MP gives her greater ability to investigate why she didn’t get a peerage. The other is that she wants to use resigning as a lever to publicise the new bill when it comes out.

Personally I think she is over thinking the peerage. She had the whip with drawn for doing reality tv show and not letting the party know, she wouldn’t show up to work for a month. That’s dismissal in any job and IMHO grounds for not getting a peerage

This is all just cosplay for him. Same as Truss. They get to fly around on private planes between photo ops and pretend to be important, then when they're inevitably booted out, they just * off to America to make a fortune with their right wing chums

As for Dorres, she's been trolling the electorate for years now. Now she's just thought '* it!' and she's trolling her own party
