Just wondering if I have this right....

My work terminated my contract.
In my termination letter, it says:

In line with the terms of your contract, this letter serves notice of four weeks to 31st May to end this contract. You are not required to work your notice period but will be paid in lieu of this. The final payment will be subject to income tax and National Insurance contributions in the usual way.

My contract says:
Your salary of £xxx per year is payable on or around the 20th of the month by BACS, in arrears...

Now, I'm always a bit suspicious of my old work as they always mess HR stuff up, so I emailed to ask if I would be paid again on June 20th, but they said "no - your May 20th salary payment was your last one".

My understanding is that the payment on May 20th was for work in the month of April, and I am due a payment for my notice period between May 1st and May 31st.

Nah - I think they are right on this one. Easiest way to check - how long were you working before you got your first pay?

I’d say that pay day on 20th May was for The month of May, that is payment in arrears as it will be considered month end. I’ve now worked at a couple of places where payment is made around that point in the month rather than last Friday, working day etc. Sorry.

I think the arrears bit means you work for 20 days until you get paid. I doubt many people would wait 20 days after a month ends before getting paid.

Yeah, we get paid on the 22nd. Three weeks in arrears, one in advance.

Ah ok, that makes sense. Have checked my payslips and I have been paid for the correct number of months
