As you’ll all know all 75 year olds got offered a booster. The cut off point to be invited in Scotland is you have to be 75 by 30th of June
My mum, who is massively overly paranoid about covid, to the point that’s she’s barely seen any of her friends in 2 years, is 75 on 4th July. She’s been told by the vaccination hotline that not only will she not be invited for a vaccination before then (understandable), but she won’t be given one after she turns 75 until they roll out the autumn booster
That’s frankly ridiculous given for the last two years all we’ve heard about is how important it is for folks to get a booster. I’m telling her if she speaks to her gp he’ll sort her out. Do they have any discretion to do that? Ta
but she won’t be given one after she turns 75 until they roll out the autumn booster
That sounds a much better proposal imo, she will have the maximum protection at a time when catching viruses is more likely.
If she has her booster now the protection will have waned come autumn/winter.
Got to be a cut off somewhere and there will always be edge cases, I sympathise but she also needs to be more pragmatic around the risks (assum8ng she us specifically vulnerable) given we're heading into summer. Plus what Ernie said which might help her not worry so much.
Ernie +1
Autumn booster would seem perfect. And that would not be on the cards if she had the booster in July.

I think the over 75s will get a booster in autumn as well
If not then I agree shes way better getting one in autumn if she can only get one

Minimum of 6 months between boosters. So a July booster for her would mean Jan minimum for the next one & and xmas time at her lowest levels of defence.

yes, this.
xmas time at her lowest levels of defence.
And viruses love Christmas!

Makes perfect sense. Levels have dropped for now so a booster wouldn’t be as beneficial. Far better for her to get it when the risks age higher.
And viruses love Christmas!
They certainly do!
I’ll be the dissenting voice. She, or you should ask her GP for the booster. If she’s really not socialising out of fear of Covid, the early booster gives her the confidence to see people again over the summer, when it can more easily be done outside or with a bunch of open windows. Hiding away forever is no way to live, and if she’s not seen folks for two years now, something needs to get her going again.

Or counselling.... Or a placebo booster..... Getting the booster at that stage would leave it waining at the worst possible time that's illogical.
So I see that the Scottish health secretary has today appealed for all the over 75s to get a booster as we have another wave on the go
Yet Anyone in Scotland who turns 75 after the 30th June is ineligible. Absolutely non sensical, particularly as in England she’d been allowed to get one from the date she turns 75 as per jcvi guidance
As it is she’ll be one of the most exposed people out there
Absolutely furious
