I was having about a ton of glass delivered for the new balustrade but the truck driver was unwilling to try and reverse down the drive so he decided we should split the pallet and unload sheet by sheet. This would have been fine if the guys in the distribution warehouse had strapped the glass to the pallet as per procedure.

They weren't strapped and one side fell on the driver pinning his legs down and the other side fell off the truck pretty much on top of me but I managed to just step back. I jumped onto the truck to get the glass off his pinned leg. It was only after this I felt my glasses really pinching my nose.

The falling glass had been so close to my face it dragged my specs down my nose and broke them. I reckon that is about as close as you can get to being hit by 1/2 ton of falling glass without getting a scratch.

I am buzzing. Both of us are okay. He had a cup of tea, biscuit and a sit down for a while.

The company were great in response. Does he need an ambulance, is everyone okay, do they need to send a replacement driver, anything they can do? Follow up call from senior manager saying pretty much the same and apologising profusely saying they have opened a serious incident and near miss investigation. he already said that he can only see the fault being at their end in distribution and not with the truck driver or us etc. Please could I make a statement if required for their investigation.

Rubber_Buccaneer - it was just like that - but my cat like reactions meant I didn't notice the glass until I felt my specs squeezed to my nose. I have noticed a slight red graze on the end of my nose now. I think I wine add wine.

Blimey! Good to hear you are both OK. Nowhere near as spectacular, Mrs Sims had delivery driver refuse to deliver beyond the road once, although he wouldnt help so he watched her carry two tonnes of gravel in 25kg backs round the back of the house.

I think you mean - this would be fine if we had checked how they were secured before cutting the strap...

A few years ago I had a very large crate fall off a truck on me. It was stacked on top of another crate and the runners on it were the running in the wrong orientation so as it was being unloaded it toppled. Someone must have shouted something because it hit me from the base of my spine to the back of my head so I was actually ducking under the truck as it hit. I immediately jumped up but when I saw what had actually hit me and from how high it had fallen I decided the best thing was to lie down and not move. This was reinforced by the fact that the person it had brought down off the truck with it was on the ground and not looking in a great way. I got carted of to Geneva hospital on a spinal board with neck brace and was very well looked after with x-rays and scans. After a couple of hours they cleared me to go, no damage but I was pretty sore for a while and found either lying down, sitting or standing would get pretty uncomfortable after a while so I just had to keep moving. I went back to the stand build and later in the day I managed to knock a drill off the counter that had been in the crate that had fallen on me which hurt far more than the impact of the crate!

The other person wasn't quite so lucky and had a fractured spine. They've made a full recovery but it was a nasty and scary time for them. You got lucky today WCA, long may it last!

Born lucky 🙂

I think you mean – this would be fine if we had checked how they were secured before cutting the strap…

Cut the metal strap and all was well. It was only as we cut the plastic and bubble wrap that the whole thing ripped in half dumping half the glass on him and half on me. There should have been strapping holding the glass to the crate, not just around the bubble wrap and no way to see through the bubble wrap to spot it wasn't there

I hope the distribution department don't frame an innocent party.

Still, lucky for the OP, an inch closer and it could have been curtains.
