I've had some issues with my left hip over the last 2 or 3 years which left me with localised pain that felt to me was coming from the joint itself. As a heavy lad I had it looked at including x-ray and MRI and it turned out to be muscular, and I was prescribed with stretching and strengthening exercises (months after the worst of the pain faded). The left hip area is probably 95% fine now.

Yesterday I had my earphones on at my desk as usual and somebody startled me when tapping on my shoulder. As a result I felt my right hip twinge and an immediate sharp pain.
Later in the afternoon I dropped a folder and in the resultant attempt to catch it my hip twinged again and the pain caused me to yelp like a scalded puppy dog.

Overnight I felt ok but this morning on the way to work I could tell something wasnt right and again at my desk today i've had 2 sharp twinges, plus im unable to walk without limping. I've tried lifting my chair as I tend to have it at its lowest setting in order to get myself down to a comfy desk level. I have a really long torso and short inseam. I'm worried that this is also causing me to over-extend my leg/hip joints.
I'm also concerned that lack of exercise over the last couple of years has left me with musuclar atrophy and the strength of a weakling.

What's the deal?
Rest? Exercise my RHS asap? Titanium hip-joint?

WTF is wrong with me? I'm only 37. I don't want to die.

I'm worried that this is also causing me to over-extend my leg/hip joints.

put a pile of books or reams of paper under your desk to rest your feet on.

sounds like you'd pulled something. Given your history though I'd refer yourself to a physio or visit your GP for advice.

Do you still do the stretches/stengthening exercises or did you stop when the symptoms sorted themselves out?

Get a referral to a hip specialist ASAP. There are so many things a lad of your proportions could be suffering from, and not all of them hip related . I put up with the pain for years but now await a total replacement due to a congenital cam impingement. There are plenty of "young hip specialists" out there, and all is not lost.

Man.. I am never googling 'hip pain' again. Turns out I have everything wrong with me and need multiple probes inserted. 'frequent ejaculation' being a best course of treatment though. Every cloud.

Guilty as charged of no longer carrying out strengthening exercises.

Weird thing is, the pain in my left hip came on suddenly during a period in time of my best fitness and least heavy state, hence reluctance to put this episode down to having put weight on.

6 month turnaround last 2 times I used them

Thankfully this injury is new to this hip - so I should be covered by work private healthcare scheme this time.

Why on earth would you go straight for the nuclear option of an ortho consultant? Here's an idea - give it a couple of weeks and see if it settles down. If it doesn't then go to your GP. They are well placed and qualified to decide how to treat you or refer you on.

Everyone going straight to specialists with small insignificant ailments is why the NHS is gubbed.

I've had to ask for my last 2 referals after months of dilly-dallying around trying various ointments and potions that i'd already tried and knew wouldnt work.

Everyone going straight to specialists with small insignificant ailments is why the NHS is gubbed.

Had LHS hip injury for over 18mths before I went to see GP. 2nd hip has similar symptoms - ****ed if im going to go through the same for another 18mths.
Have already stated that i'm likely to go private on this occasion.

I'm not having a go at you slimjim78. It's others who have no idea of your history who are suggesting seeing specialists.

It's not easy getting to see a specialist. I've never managed anything less than 4 months. In fact, I pretty much don't bother trying unless my body tells me that something is genuinelty not going to heal without profesisonal intervention.

Even then its usually best to hand over your hard earned for a speedier resolution.
