Every summer my hedge is full of bees. I mean full of bees. Thousands of the buggers. The whole hedge buzzes and seems to shimmy like it's one giant bee. It's quite funny watching people leap backwards when the hedge buzzes at them, and it's nice to see there are some areas unaffected by the bee population collapse but I would really like to know just what they find so appealing in a rather ordinary (to me) hedge.

Here is the hedge (I can't work out the link to embed it)

The bees were there but I don't think you can see them in the photo. I didn't fancy getting too close in case one of them took me for a paparazzi.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Set up a boom-box nearby, and play them some Sea Of Bees, perhaps it'll calm them down! 😀

Looks like a cotoniaster which has tiny flowers which don't really look like flowers. Is it covered in red berries later in the year?

just returned from watching the tour highlights...

There's a bees nest in your hedge ?

I wondered that but I don't think so

with a name like yours you should be able to smoke 'em out..

do you think those smoke blowing things beekeepers have are really over-sized mechanical blow back devices?? 😈

Is it covered in red berries later in the year?

yes

we may have an answer...

We have a cotoneaster bush that is also a bee magnet - must just bee the variety. Definitely no nest in ours, they just love the flowers, which is handy as the bush is near my broad beans and they need pollinating, in case any of the bees are reading this!

<trying to come up with a wheelsize joke.>

Bees love that stuff, we've got quite a few plants that are supposed to be good for bees but they ignore most of it and head straight for the hedges.

thanks for all the answers (even the painful puns). I had considered whether I should take cuttings off the hedge to support bee colonies countrywide but it seems we should just encourage beekeepers to grow cotoniaster close to their hives.

cheers all, this was a great example of the way STW excels at answering random questions

I like this too but I don't like to wax lyrical about it. I supose without it we could just bumble along but it better to comb the hive mind occasionally
