My dad who is a retired computer programmer has just sent me the following link:
What's it like to pick up a brand new Rolls Royce
At first I was interested in the facts about the leather and the RR deodorant.
However now I'm wandering if it is a hint about an impending windfall!!
Do you think he'll be put out if a choose a Caterham instead?
If you get a RR, can I have your bike?
Topically... my British colleague in Lagos, Nigeria, has just texted that he's just seen a brand new white Rolls-Royce 2-door coupé being delivered on the back of a flatbed..... when all around is the filth and misery of the worst city in the world. Unbelieveable what people will do to assert their status.
He's just about to blow your inheritance on a motor!
Do they still make them? 🙂 Obviously they do but I see plenty of bentleys out and about (far more than you used to) but I can't think when I last saw a Roller of any sort let alone a new one.
I'm reminded of the scene from Local Hero where the villagers are discussing the relative merits of Lamborghinis and Roll Royces for carrying sheep.
Cashing in his pension pot?
Isn't half that rollover lottery jackpot still unclaimed? Does your Dad want another son by any chance?

Yep, when RR and Bentley were split up and Bentley went to VW and RR to BMW they changed focus - Bentley when down market (everything is relative I suppose) and started making the Contiental and Flying Spur which cost £100k to £150k ish - they still made the Anarge which was the last joint RR/Bentley car they made but you rarely see them. RR went up market stopped making the Silver Seraph (RR verions of the Anarge) which cost £150k and started making the Phantom which cost £300k, they make others now too, but they're all top end.
They're very rare, low volume cars, Bentleys are more mainstreem (relatively) and there are a lot more of them about.
I've seen the odd modern [s]VW[/s] RR around Manchester. Not footballers, they're in Bentleys.
Mate works there, he says in recent years the time taken to do any given job has been cut by 10-15% and that inevitably corners get cut. Just sayin', I'd hate for the STW Inner Party not to know what they're spending their [s]hard-earned[/s] ill-gotten gains on.....
One customer asked for the entire boot of his Phantom Drophead Coupé to be refrigerated to ensure his favourite champagne reached his yacht at the perfect temperature.
Bet you a million quid and a leg that customer in question pays zero income tax.
Phantom which cost £300k,
I think that might be a starting point, without any type of option.
There is no such thing as a VW RR - it's a BMW RR. Vickers used to own RR cars which included Bently. VW bought the business off Vickers for the RR brand, but made a monumental F-up and didn't realise the RR brand was still owned by RR plc (the Aeroengine makers who sold off the car division to Vickers decades ago) and lisenced the brand to Vickers for use on RR Cars. RR plc then sold the right to the RR brand for use with cars to BMW leaving VW to make the best they could with the poor relation. Just goes to show the largest multi-nationals can screw up too.

Our Nanny's RR cost nearly twice that by the time we'd added a diamond studded fold down nappy changing platform and emerald encrusted bottle warmer....

Yeah I think the base level Phantom 'LS' comes with velour seats, plastic wheel trims and manual windows in the back 😉
I've seen a few invoices for Phantoms and Arnarges over the years and some of the 'bespoke features' come with insane price tags, casmire headlinings and lambswool mats for £15k and stuff like that - you can go a lot further nowadays too, I seem to remember RR make a pinic set that fits in the boot for £25k or something silly like that.
The Phantom has got a nice feature - umbrellas that stow away in the rear doors - £1000 each, some Skodas also have the same feaure, I think they're £40 each...
Ricky Hatton drives a new shape RR now , he was cruising through Hyde in it about a week ago, he used to have a Bentley continental though.
Brother in law works at Bentley.
He gets a new VAG (up to £28k), every 3 months for £75 a month all in, so he tells me.
This alone is the highlight of his career.
That 4x4 they've built looks truly gopping.

Lamborghini and Maseratti I think you'll find - as in "You'll not get two rams and a bale of hay in the trunk of a Maserati" 🙂

I just had to go and google it didn't I? Someone pass the eye bleach...
I like the umbrellas in the RR doors, although the best & most pointless feature is the way the "RR" logos on the wheel centres are mounted on high spec bearings so the logo is always the right way up... thought it was a wacky rumour until I seen one - quite impressive attention to detail all the same!
Friend of a friend is in the process of buying one, lot of background checks to make sure he has the money (not finance) and is the right sort of customer. Amazingly, they think he is acceptable. They'll be sending some people to help him spec his car.
I don't get the attraction with RR's and Bentleys. Both my neighbours have Bentley Coupe's but rarely use them (probably because they're too huge to park anywhere).

Pretty standard working for a manufacturer, wife works for Kia and she qualifies for three company cars (any model), for free (although you get taxed as benefit in kind). Her car changes every 7000 miles which works out at 3 months.
During a visit to the MK Bently factory I asked something about spare part availability. I was told Bentleys did *not ever* break down and I was not to ask any more questions.
Pompous.
They don't even look nice anymore.

Oohh I dunno...

Looks quite capable..
How did I know that if any one on STW, mcmoonter (or chipps) would own an old one..
😆
I was told Bentleys did *not ever* break down
They dont.
They simply fail to proceed 😉
Years and years ago I visited the old RR/Bentley factory in Crewe. My BiL was considering a Bentley (went for an S Class Mercedes instead for the record).
Apart from the bodies (which were made by Rover I think at the time), everything was made on site. Really interesting experience. From the ladies (not being sexist, they were just all female) on the sewing machines at one end of the factory stitching leather, to the completed car being tested on a rolling road at the other end. Apparently a 6 week process from start to finish. Lovely craftsmanship all over the cars (metal, wood, leather etc.).
The test drive in a turbocharged Bentley was er.. interesting. Like being thrown forward at high speed in a very soft leather glove.
