I posted a ute/pick-up bike rack system on FB marketplace item this morning and shortly after I get a message from a guy asking where I'm located. I respond and the next message is a suggestion that his cousin can pick up because he's "out of town".

I'm in Australia. He's got a Polish name and every one of his FB friends does too ... I think I can conclude he's not a genuine buyer.

So... it seems too good an opportunity for entertainment to just leave there. Any ideas?

Blimey. I now have possibly a Romanian person wanting to "buy it"

Viorel Dascalu and Sebastian Rojek. Pretty sure I didn't post it to any Eastern European FB groups.

When they ask for directions tell them it's the next right after [insert famous Australian landmark here].

[insert famous Australian landmark here]

That big hill they named after the communications officer on Star Trek before renaming it in honour of an English humourist poet?

(aside: I misremembered which Scottish late-80s TV show that sketch was from so without really thinking it through did a Google image search for "Naked Video little girl" and am now probably on a list somewhere)

and then back again... I think you mean the world's largest single rock monolith? Strictly speaking I do live to the right of it... if you come from the correct direction.

You have reminded me of this though. A much safer search.

Ask for a deposit, in cash, to be sent via Ups courier, to your cousin, as you're out of town too 😁

As long as his cousin brings money what's the problem. Don't meet at home if you are worried.

A large proportion of my recent eBay sales (40 odd in 6 weeks as selling mates estate) have been bought by people with eastern European sounding names, some of whom I've met and they have all been great* - just saying...

* I've jinxed it now haven't I

Nobody loves Eastern European people than me. But these people have no other friends on their profiles other than those from the same countries… not at all sus.

I actually used to play football for an Australian Polish football team. Why don’t you believe me?

I've had similar - I wonder if they are false or hijacked profiles or similar being used by scammers.

They all have photos and friends which are not in UK, not even a check-in or similar in UK.

Block and move on.

Hello old chap, Bertie Wooster here. Is the apparatus still available? My old chum Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright is currently on a botany tour of the Antipodean hill country collecting wild flowers or some such, and could his manservant could swing by and collect it next Thursday. What ho?

If his cousin collects and gives you cold hard cash, then you've just effectively sold it to his cousin - what his cousin does with it you don't care as you've got the cash?

Because neither the cousin nor the cash exists

Just as easily as you can look up his Facebook info they can look up yours. If you think of any other online market place users are pretty much anonomous other than a feedback system. So a scammer knows very little about their mark. Facebook has years of each users interests, opinions, all the social engineering memes they've fallen for. Its an absolute goldmine.

If you think it's an opportunity for entertainment that displays a little bit of credulity. Giving scammers more information about yourself even if you think you're being obtuse just gives them more of a profile of you. You think you're cleverer than them but if their aim is to appear stupid then you're maybe not as clever as you think 🙂

Good point. But not strictly true because all of my information including my name is hidden to all apart from Friends. Only one of whom is Polish.

I have also sold a fair bit of stuff to local people who only seem to have FB friends in their home country. Maybe they are lonely and friendless in their new land?
See what transpires?

TBF, in the recent rugby league world cup Australia had about 4 different sides out, they were just called Lebanon, Greece and the Cook Islands....

I've had a few impossibly good looking women half my age randomly slide into my DMS recently (one who's photos had been stolen by an Instagram influencer!)

Been a lot of fun, apparently I have broken their hearts.

I sold loads on FB marketplace, always meeting in public place and cash. Loads of scammers tho, I must have blocked 50. The follow up emails are laughable, sad some people fall for it.
