... Trouble is he needs it for work purposes in a couple of weeks and it has an incredibly hard to get visa in it. What do you suggest for drying the thing out and keeping it in as good condition as possible?

Phone the passport office and if needed, go to the appropriate embassies.

I suggest [s]you[/s] he (1) gets himself to the passport office and does a same day job and (2) he phones up the relevant embassy and pays whatever it takes to get the visa again.
