Noticed this last summer when being used hard, this summer it has started when it gets hot as well as hard.
I spoke to the manufacturer who have sugested that after 17 years the bonding agents in the Bass drivers are breaking down. I have also noticed that the Bass seems less acuurate that it used to but after 17 years of almost daily use I cant complain.
So, to the point, I would like some new speakers, the direct placement standmount is now too big so I have been considering some compact floorstanders. I have on the list MA Bronze 200 and Silver 200, Dali Oberon 5 and Opticon 5.
They will be paierd with a Marantz PM6006 (if this is upgraded in future possibly a Marrantz 7000 or similar DAC equiped stereo amp).
What else should I consider for audition?
All bass are smelly fish.
Cant you just fit new drivers.
I should get some treble hooks to catch them
I could get some new drivers, any suggestions of a decent source?
I think after 17 years its time to try something different though.
I can’t advise on that, way out of my experience but I’m sure it’s possible. Someone with more knowledge than me will be along in a minute,
eddiebaby do you have speaker recomendation for me to try?
Sorry. I listen mainly on headphones or through a 1600W PA system. HiFi is not my thing.
I would like some new speakers
Oh thank christ that's what you were talking about.
Ha, yeah I went for that 'cause people like a click bait thread title. What speakers should I try Cougar?
Are your current ones ported? If so, check inside for dead fish.
I shook them out and Noah and the Whale came out of one and a Flock of Seaguls the other
This is disapointing given the amount of Audis, woodburners and beards on the forum. I thought there would be stereo fanatics a plenty. I'm going to have to sign up to AVSforums and tell them about my room treatment.
Just for clrification the smell is more copydex than harbour at low tide in August.
Edit : Ported...nice touch, its the right had speaker that smell the most though.
It’s the left hand ones that go first south of the equator.
Interesting, does it make any difference if they are made south of the equator and played in the north?
I think the title is perhaps not attracting the AV crowd, for some reason!
Those are all quite new speakers options wise too, so it's hard to know if anyone will have tried all of those.
I was thinking of getting some replacements recently, my preference was for the Kef R3's but adding stands to those made the budget slightly mental.
The MA bronze 500's appealed too though.
It's probably like anything speaker based though, you need to try them out to see what you prefer.
Sorry, I don't have any puns to add.
The fluid inside electrolytic capacitors smells like fish when it boils. Possibly one has let go in the crossover. Unless it's accessible by removing the terminal plate though, need to remove a driver to check.
The crossover is often glued to the input plate, just take that off, tho you might need to de solder the drivers to actually work on it.
Never heard of woofers smelling with age, and there are a lot of old speakers about.
Thread title far too cryptic, I'm only replying as I am feeling charitable 🙂
Thanks Toby and Rich.
Al, I’m humbled by your charity, thanks for the advice.
I checked out the internals of the speakers using some YouTube guides after the advice above and all seems fine. The smell seems to be inside the boxes. It’s faint when they are cold but every component smells so I guess which ever is the culprit has permeated the box and when driven hard the smell exits via the ports. These are on the front so I am more likely to smell it as I walk past.
