My 50th is coming up soon, and I have been asked by my family to put together a wishlist.

I. have. no. idea.

The world's suffering aside, I have never liked my birthday, but have celebrated it for my kids' sake. I don't think I need anything, and Mrs SR already signed me up for a kayaking course (that I am currently on) for Christmas, so an adventure-type gift probably isn't on the cards.

I thought of German lessons, but they are looking a bit expensive.

So inspire me. How would you treat yourself?

I was 50 last year, I wanted a weekend away in Cordoba and a family party. Thanks to covid and ill parents I’m still waiting! I did get a biking trip with my buddy later on last year though.

I think more than anything I’d like some time away with the missus though. Maybe next year.

Just had mine and asked for memory with my wife as we don't get much time to ourselves.

I don't enjoy parties, and didn't want an object (although she bought me a watch anyway) so we went to see the Book of Mormon (hilarious) and spent a luckily very clear night with champagne, wine and cheese gazing over an illuminated London from the 40th floor of the Shard.

For my 50th we booked a whole campsite and invited loads of family and friends, asking them all to bring food and booze for the weekend.
We had a hog roast on the Saturday evening and it was brilliant having everyone together.

My parents and sisters clubbed together and bought me a GoPro and a few accessories.

A few mates,a beach, surfboards and a BBQ.

Was going to do a track day at Spa, but covid 🙁

Got a new road bike instead 🙂
And no hassle from SWMBO when I bought a cheap BMW 'vert to cruise around in for the summer!

For me and my brother’s combined 100th ( I’m a twin) we took some rooms for the families in a small Cotswold hotel, had a lovely walk, a great meal and leisurely breakfast the following morning. We had our parents, partner’s parents, my brother’s kid’s, my sister’s kids (she lives in Italy and couldn’t make it due to work). So glad we did it as it was the last time we were all together in good health. Our mother died a few years later, my brother’s mother in law became very frail and the kid’s all now have jobs all over and so similar opportunities never arose.

I broke my leg quite badly 2 months after my 49th birthday.
For my 50th, it just so happened i had 8 days off on the trot that weekend, so my wife suggested if we were careful with cash, we could go to Canada for a week.
It was chuffing brilliant.
We’d been before on holiday, but this time stood out because it was my birthday and also because i was finally starting to get some strength back in my leg.
Far better than buying ‘something because’
Other destinations are available.

I went on a group cycling holiday to Cuba on my own for my 50th. Fabulous holiday and a great way to see and experience a unique country. The group leader somehow worked out it was my birthday so ended up having a surprise celebration.

Family meal out at a place of your choice, and the whole Saxon tribe need to bring along their favourite photo of you and them together, they also have to bring their best remembered Dad stories of when they were growing up and songs that they associate with you. Your partner has to do the same, with bonus points for supplying stories from your past that will make them/you cringe. Trust me,it will be the best of nights. 😉 😀😃🙂

I have a plan, well an idea at least: the continental divide. There are a few logistical and financial barriers to overcome but if I pull it off it would be memorable.

I was 50 last year and likewise didn't really want to do much. Had ideas I might like a mtb holiday in spain or canada a few years before but as it got closer and with Covid it kinda came and went. Still got 3 trips away this year Madeira , Nerja and a cycling trip to Mallorca so not all bad.
I think for my 50th I got some DT swiss wheels and palladium boots.

Didn't ask for anything. Got a RocketMAX. Win.

(Incidentally, Cotic were apparently brilliant over this - I had been talking about getting a new Cotic and they agreed to make up plausible excuses as to why I couldn't have one if I put an order in)

That was two years ago. Only just (thanks to injury and Covid induced local riding) now starting to really get to know the beast. It's brilliant.

But yeah, if you don't want a 'thing', ask for a 'place' and some 'time'.

My wife organised a surprise party for me. The restaurant at work sorted the venue & everyone got a double decker bus out there.
I got home from a ride to an empty house until a Tesla arrived to take me out there.
The crew I ride with on wednesday nights pitched in to get me a Dewalt table saw, top bunch of blokes who did well not to give it away.

Love this idea.

Mrs Mellie and I will be having a joint 50th next year by ****ing off somewhere. I did have grand plans pre-covid for a long haul 'statement' holiday, but I think we'll get just as much enjoyment from doing what we know we love (e.g. a Greek island) but with a bit of added luxury. So, upgrading from the usual Daewoo Matiz hire car 😀

I'm not a party person so wanted to do something for "me" when my 60th came around. Mrs S and I flew to Barra for the weekend. We landed on the beach, ticking that off my "bucket list". It's a tiny plane so I also knew that none of our friends were likely to surprise me by turning up at the hotel 🙂

It was November but the weather was great, we had a lovely, chilled weekend just eating, drinking and walking. Just superb.

My 50th was two years ago today (it's Tuesday this year). I jokingly asked for some time off work. Then on the Sunday we just listened as the world shut down.
So yeah my fault soz.

I have mine in a month or so.
I will be on a Scottish beach with the family in the caravan so I will be as happy as can be.
I did think about a bike but the one I have is fine
I do know two presents that I am getting. An engraved bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label with glasses from the whisky exchange. I would never spend that on whisky for myself and I will have a nice bottle and glasses to keep.
The other is Radiohead Glastonbury 97 on vinyl.
We will probably do an impromptu bbq and pizzas in the garden on a nice weekend sometime close for family

I took 49 of my friends and family on a steamer along the Thames. It was what we needed after a truly annus horiblis the year before. Two of my family couldn’t come and one of those paid for it. The reason they couldn’t come was the reason for the previous year’s misery and we all needed something to cheer us up. It was a great day.

And on my actual 50th, I raced the UCI World championship TT and road race in Albi.

Do something, don’t buy something.

I like birthdays, just don't like making a big deal about them (well my own that is, daughter's is different). For my 50th myself and my wife went out for a nice meal. 55 this June, 5 nights in a really nice hotel in Majorca booked but timing is just co-incidence, actually now that I think about it, we'll be home before my birthday 🙂
