I have been looking around for a couple of music books to buy Son #2 .
He loves his guitar so my short list so far is :-
Set the Boy Free ..Johnny Marr
Lonely Boy ..Steve Jones
Scar Tissue ..Anthony Kiedis
How Music Works..David Byrne
Any other suggestions mucho appreciated.
Thanks
Head On . Julian Cope. Lots of drug references if you are ok with that.
A crazy crazy book.
Life....Keith Richards
A colourful life as you might expect
I read a great Jeff Buckley and Tim biography. Two for the price of one! There's a few biogs for both men but this is the one I've read. If it gets your son into their great music then even better. And Jeff was a virtuoso guitarist, GIT graduate/ LA shredder if your boy is an axeman

The new Rob halford autobiography is supposed to be good, particularly if your son's a metalhead. It might be a bit near the knuckle though
The Dirt - Motley Cru
Slash
Not guitar related, but James Fearnley wrote a brilliant memoir of his time with the pogues....
And head on as above, and the sequel repossessed by cope are also great.
Acid for the children: Flea
Scar Tissue ..Anthony Kiedis
Very little about music, almost entirely about his drug taking. Just in case that might not be suitable for your son.
Duff from G'n'R was a great read. Also a mountain bike tie in.
Duff from G’n’R was a great read. Also a mountain bike tie in.
Slash's one is very good as well
Girl in a Band - Kim Gordon
Clothes, Music, Boys - Viv Albertine
Another vote for Life….Keith Richards - It's facsinating about his stageringly colourful life and also on discussing some of his playing style. And just very well (ghost)-written.
I'm interested to read the David Byrne book - he should be an interesting writer.
Substance by Peter Hook is one of the best I’ve read.
How not to run a club is also decent but a bit off topic.
Henry Rollins - Get in the Van. Less of a biography per se and more of a history of his time with Black Flag. Some insane stories of hard work, and long months. NOT a typical rock star book.
+1 for Peter Hook, he is very funny and frank about NO and JD days
Dave Grohl's is a good read.
If he's into classic UK guitarists try Bernie Marsden's Where’s My Guitar?: An Inside Story of British Rock and Roll. Loads of great tales - mostly drug free.
And My Bass and Other Animals by Guy Pratt is great and often hilarious
both have quite a lot of "gear detail" if he's into that.
Dave Grohl’s is a good read.
I have that floating around somewhere... really must get round to reading it
Thanks folks.
Ordered Life ,Substance and because he's a leftie and one of his mates has 'loaned' him a Bass, I had to get him Playing the Bass with 3 Left Hands 🙂
45 by Bill Drummond
Bit more niche, but 'Hardcore Troubadour; the life and near death of Steve Earle' is good.

Great choice.
I had to buy some of Will Carruthers artwork after reading that.
Oh yeah! Also his 1970s Gibson Thunderbird bass is up for auction!
Marvellous story here:

The Dirt – Motley Cru
really good, it'll make you think you wasted your life though.
The gym I go to had a table with books on for members to leave and take before Covid and I picked up the Adam Ant Biography which was good.
Another vote for Will Carruthers – Playing the Bass With 3 Left Hands
A very honest and enjoyable read.
Another vote for Rollins - Get In The Van.
But I bet you can all guess why I would say that...
