Does anyone on here ever actually listen to the music posted on the various music threads? Because we always seem to create these threads full of youtube videos, but I get the feeling - on music threads more than anywhere - that people are actually just setting out the stuff they like without paying attention to others' suggestions.

I could be wrong, though. Do YOU listen to any or all of the samples and suggested bands and/or songs on those threads?

Occasionally. Recommendations is an excellent way to widen your musical horizons.

Nope. I mostly skip them, especially when they (quickly) become a pissing contest to see who can come up with the most obscure artist.

If it's a genre that I might like then mostly yes.

I'll scan down the page and play any links that i don't recognise. Did it a couple of days ago on the jazz thread.

Was just listening to some suggestions this morning and skipped back to stw to get more inspiration. Which is when I opened this thread.

Pretty much that ^^.

And anybody that posts a massive cut'n'paste of their favourite lyrics expecting that anyone else will be arsed to read it is deluded.

I listen to most of them (it's just 3 minutes out of your life) unless I know the artist and know I'm not keen on their stuff already, and carry on what I'm doing while it plays in the background, if something catches my attention, it's probably worth investing in time to explore. But some of the "self appointed music gurus" can be a little wearisome about it if you offer an opinion, so I've stopped doing that.

Obscure music is treasure. Secret maps to new undiscovered places.

Mainstream can get a bit samey if you listen to a lot of music and a lot of music lovers don't like beige.

Most of the stuff posted here isn't really that obscure anyway, just maybe not on the radar of some of the older or more staid contributors.

This.

Plus they all seem to be depressing or political or pretentious or some obscure stoner hip hop/dance track.

I sometimes listen to them, although agree on the obscure peeing contest thing.

It would be useful for people to standardise their posting format:

Line 1: Artist

Line 2: Song Title (and version if relevant)

Line 3: Youtube link.

Just posting the artist & title isn't enough for me to bother opening up Youtube to search for the song myself.

Just posting up the Youtube link isn't enough as often the full artist & track isn't visible in the preview image (often only the first 20 characters or so ), or the link is not correctly formatted so it appears as hyperlink with no clue as to what the song, so I am unlikely to bother opening

I had a quick listen to some on my sunny snooze thread.

Not really my kind of stuff but definitely will be giving Solid Air a spin during this afternoon's snooze.

If it's a listen to some Northern Soul or Dub thread then I'm going to give it more of a listen than a poodle metal one.

I think you're judging people by your own standards there.

Apart from the all the classical,  jazz,  blues, etc.  🙂

Sadly, yeah. 🙂

If I'm in the house I'll usually have a catch up on the Tune Association thread, or whatevers on the front page.

I've heard some great stuff I'd never have stumbled accross by myself.

Not bothered about genre, it's all just noise, some I like, some I don't.

Theres not much point in linking mainstream stuff is there? Everyone has already heard it. To suggest something that others might discover you have to go a bit left field. Is that pretentious?

As above, I listen to some and skip others, have discovered some great music and also heard some absolute drivel but then music is a very subjective thing so no-one can ever be categorically right or wrong 😀

Some of you post some weird shit, so no I don't listen to all that odd Take for instance the "i'm sleepy, looking for chilled out music" thread, theres some proper weird stuff on there that I'd never click on. There are some in there that took my fancy so clicked and listened to a couple but mostly it was rubbish.
But theres no accounting for taste, some stuff I post on here probably goes un clicked too.. Which is fine, because we all have different tastes.

Edited: still having to take out all that <span> <div> shit.

Yes. On the Tune Association thread I listen to almost every track. Usually not the novelty/mashup stuff (sorry jhj! 😆 )

Have discovered some superb stuff through that.

Most threads have stuff I've heard or am not interested in, so won't listen on most of those. (eg. the jazz thread. Did try a few, but they made me queasy)

ps. If you use the word "obscure" (negatively) in 2018 then you're a narrow minded twerp and the stuff I post won't be for you.

I dont listen to them all, just the ones that look interesting.

I like obscure as if it wasn't there's a fair chance I'd know about it already... duh.

I've recently been investigating 'spanish' derived or influenced stuff. Its been interesting. Found some obscure stuff I really like. But, hey, that's world music for you.

anyone for shooglenifty? Thought not.... 😂

Love music.  I give a listen to most if not all of links posted that I haven't heard before.  Also sometimes reminded of artists I'd forgotten about. Old, new, obscure, popular...am always hungry for more stuff I've not heard, and one song can send me off an a new trail/family tree.  Ace. Keep them coming.  Music snobs can womble their cocklets elsewhere tho for all I care.  I'll still visit their links, probably 🤔

I listen to a lot of the stuff posted in the Tune Association thread but not all. I often use discogs to find stuff I've never heard before and have listened to all the way through and appreciate on some level. At times I post before the track ends and my opinion changes by the time it ends, but someone else could think differently so leave it.

Yes to some but can be almost random what makes me decide to click on a thread or an example in it. Found some great stuff but at the same time, a bit

they (quickly) become a pissing contest to see who can come up with the most obscure artist

as well.

But..... you never know which is which and you might have to kiss a few frogs to find your prince.

Actually it's not so different to John Peel BITD. Let's be honest, there were a fair few frogs in there too, but you couldn't fast forward over his Estonian death metal hip hop fusion as easily as you can skip over stuff here.

I do, I've found some new stuff that I've really enjoyed from some of the threads. Keep on keeping on music folks!

Also thanks for the Jazz one - even the stuff that people say is 'good' jazz has confirmed that that genre, and my ears, just don't mix 🙂

Hand on heart ..very little .but then I don't really expect folks to listen to stuff that I've posted .

I still do because the only  music I put out there is material that I've really enjoyed in the hope that if only one person stumbles across it and likes it then its been worthwhile.

I've still got stuff downloaded from months back that I haven't got around to listening to ..which is the only reason I don't check out more from here .

a pissing contest to see who can come up with the most obscure artist

Is utter bollocks.

Here's a list of artists:

Lil Dicky
Anne‐Marie
Post Malone
Banx & Ranx
Sigala
Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line
Zedd & Grey
Khalid & Normani

Are they obscure? They are to me, cos I've never bloody heard of them. Oh, but they're from the current Radio 1 Top 20! So not obscure in the slightest. Except to people who haven't heard of them.

There is soooo much music available now, the word obscure is meaningless.

(Sorry, one of my bugbears) 😀

I like the music threads. A couple of posters here like some of the music I listen to (waves at Footflaps) and I have dabbled in the postings on here too.

But some of the stuff that the kids listen too is just beyond me. Apart from Gorillaz. 😉

Yes mostly, for some reason someone posting multiple YouTube links without titles will get bypassed though. Apart from that I'll give most things a minute and either listen or move on.

Trouble with Radio One and that list that DezB posted, is that most are probably some producer with a random vocalist, that might get a bunch of plays, get a load of streams, then drop away into obscurity again, because I doubt many of them will be in the Radio One Top 20 in six months, let alone next year. That’s the problem with a lot of chart music, because they decided to list streams, which ultimately skews the results in favour of anyone who’s flavour of the month because they’re suddenly getting a load of streams. Streams don’t equal proper sales or earnings; two million single sales would earn a decent royalty cheque, two million streams would barely earn a decent monthly pay cheque, at 0.003p/stream, or whatever the rate is on Spotify. Peanuts, anyway.

Regarding listening to stuff posted up, sadly no, not often, I just don’t have much time these days to listen to music I own, let alone the radio or stuff posted by members. 😕

0.003p x2m= £6,000..

Still well above the national average for a monthly wage 😉😁

I listen to many of them. There is nothing wrong with obscure music. That is one of the upsides to music these days. People are making great music at studios at home or in their bedroom. You don't need a record deal. I can recommend a few artist living locally to me that put good stuff out on Bandcamp.

I genuinely believe that most people that like their music are not posting stuff to deliberately show they like music nobody else has heard of, but rather thinking

'yes you probably have not heard of this, as it is produced by my next door neighbour in his garage, but I like it and you might too.'

What is wrong with that?

P.S. Just had a quick glance back through the summer tunes thread and I would suggest that very few posts on that highlight 'obscure' artists. I think a generational divide may be the problem rather than artist obscurity.
