ive asked in years gone by and had great suggestions on here, so, for christmas 2019 please suggest some new music for me to buy the wife.

ones from the past that have gone down well are first aid kit, the staves, martha tilston etc.

so a little folksy but not trad folk and definitely more acoustic and not loud electric.

Laura Marling? Though maybe depends on what you mean by 'new' - ie: new to her or new this year.

Q Mag's recommends from the past year include Aldous Harding, Sharon van Etten, Jessica Pratt.
Worth checking out. I quite liked the middle one.

Aldous Harding - Designer
Joan Shelley - Like the river loves the sea
This is the kit - Moonshine freeze
Bill Callahan - Shepherd in a sheepskin vest
All variant kinds of folk

And there’s Lillie Mae if you’re of a country persuasion.

Karine Polwart? New Scottish Songbook album is nice mix of folk with a bit of pop/rock.
Julie Fowlis?

Peat & Diesel? A different sort of folk/rock...

There are so many female solo artists and bands featuring women it’s hard to keep up!
Weyes Blood and Joan Shelley are two I’ve bought recently, and looking through recent copies of Uncut there are good reviews of new albums by Julia Holter, Amber Arcades, Arc Iris, Molly Birch, Cat Power, Sarah Davachi, Emika, Laura Gibson, Amy Helm, Kristin Hersh, Adrianne Lenker/Big Thief, Anna St Louis, Aoife Nessa Frances, A Girl Called Eddy, (I have her first album, released in 2004, this is her second), The Innocence Mission, Keeley Forsyth, Susanne Sundfør, Squirrel Flower.
That’s just a quick scan through the last two issues.
There’s plenty more out there!
I really recommend Uncut Magazine, it has great interviews, lots of reviews of new and re-released albums, and a free sample CD that’s always worth a listen.

If she likes first aid kit try Elva. My folk go to at the moment is Gregory Alan Isakov. Can't stop listening to him.

Sound of the Sirens - absolutely brilliant. Acoustic, bit folky but not overly, stunning harmonies, amazing melodies and if you see them live bloody funny. Their album This Time is just lush.

Pop in to suggests The Oakenfold Goa Essential Mix from 1994.
Reads description of what is required.
Shuffles off as he has no knowledge of the required genre.

I fell in love with Mandolin Orange last summer - or more precisely, I fell in love with Emily of Mandolin Orange. Went to see them at some poxy little venue in Oldham Street, Manchester, which was grossly overheated and unventilated, which spoiled the whole experience. But I still love this recording of Boots of Spanish Leather for the rapport between Emily and Andrew:

Also enjoying Trampled by Turtles:

And a recent discovery, Wil Thomas. This is a lovely song:

Could try The Delines, more country than folk but very good.

Not my kind of thing, but I've seen a lot of mentions for Big Thief in respect of this sort of genre.
