Are these mushrooms edible? Loads growing in the garden over the oak sleepers.

Could be oyster mushrooms, but I’d want to check in person with 2 reference books to be sure.
That’s why I stick to chanterelles .

I am no expert but was thinking could be oyster mushrooms too. I wouldn't trust/eat anything growing out of dead wood though. Hopefully someone who knows will be along soon

Yeah they are grey oyster mushrooms. They grow on fallen wood and stumps, as well as trees, so nothing unusual there. The should be slightly yellow as the gills go towards the stump. Any split in funnel and they are poisonous devils wings, but they are rare and i think only grow north of the border.

If you are thinking about 'would I eat these?' then I wouldn't from rail sleepers (usually treated and the fungus can accumulate all sorts as it decays the wood)

Rail sleepers in gardens tend to support a couple of species in general - usually as they are stacked up / stored or installed and have a bit of damp in them. These do look to be oysters (they are a nice easy species to identify) - however without knowing your location it's never something I would want to say 100% without seeing them in person - they do appear after the spring / autumn rain as they like colder wetter temps. They are a wood rot species (so will be doing what fungi do here and breaking down the wood in your sleepers), picking them or removing them wont do anything as the mycelium will be in the wood itself and will come back on subsequent seasons - but if you want to remove the fruiting body to de-risk someone / or a pet eating them you will just need to do this on a regular basis.

Oh and the poisonous species that looks like this is Angels Wings (not devils)

50/50 on posts, but let’s see the qualifications. I might be wrong, but I think Lewis is an actual mushroom doctor!

Ah sorry angels wings yes . Oysters are known for cleaning up pollution in situ! Cool things. Didnt realise it was a competition stwhanna , I am a mere enthusiast here in scandinavia.

Not a competition, just thought it was in keeping with the usual forum IANAL/I’m no doctor but/etc postings.

Also, I’m entirely on the side of caution when it comes to the quite nice risotto:death ratio. 🙂

Edibility of mushrooms is an easy and safe thing to manage.

They are all inedible. Put them in the bin.

Well I have a PhD in mycology - it comes in useful for pub quiz's, looking at the ground and the odd WhatsApp message of 'can I eat this?' - for which I save the answer "at least once"
