I have chosen to break a journey with a few hours in the smoke next week between trains.

Any suggestions for an open gallery/museum within say 30m of Liverpool St by bike?

I started a search but thought someone on here might be in the know. I think Geffrye is closed, Dr Who a bit far out, Design a bit far west.

Tate Modern - walk/bike to St Pauls and take the bridge across the river.

Museum of London at the Barbican (which is itself cool to walk around) is 5 mins on a hire bike, 15 min walk

Not too massive, either

Giant concept store over the road too

Lots of non-giany kit in there too

Indeed Kimbers, hence asking now :). Yours is the best suggestion too, I've done the others before (soz others! It's a reasonable list).

Whitechapel Gallery, saw my favorite ever exhibition there which made me cry (in a good way) then go to tayebs for tandoori lamb chops. What an excellent few hours you will have!

There is an art collection in the Guildhall you can also look at the amphitheater remains in the basement. There is also the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Whitchapel has some fantastic shows too. John Soanes in Lincolns Inn Fields. All subject to covid.

The Museum of London is worth a visit, although due to move/expand in the next couple of years. If you do also go to the Barbican, then book a (free) ticket to visit the conservatory:

https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2020/event/visit-the-conservatory

There’s also a free show on in the curve gallery.

Yes, this. It is a bit of an hidden gem, as they dont really promote it. We went on a Saturday a few years ago, and were the only ones there.
The Whitechapel can also be good, depending on what they are showing. Walking distance away. Then to pass a bit more time you can go to Spitalfields market, Rapha store there, who seem to always have a bargain rail (which means they are not 'HFM?'.

Thanks all, great suggestions. I can't see any reference to the stuff at the Guildhall on its website tho...?

You can probably get to most museum/galleries in 30mins

I'd go with whitehall Galleries and sky garden

or Wallace collection - get off at bond street

But to be honest there so much to do in that london

I'd also say the Whitechapel. It's within an easy stab (you can walk it 10-15 mins) of Liverpool st. It's one of my favourite galleries and the right size to feel you've taken everything in an hour or so's visit, and the current set of exhibitions looks good: https://www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/

(god knows when I'll next be in London... Not been since end of march, and came back with some sort of bug that left me feeling pretty weird for a couple of weeks)
