We have a few days .....4 or 5 to spend in Munich or Nuremberg as part of a holiday. Which one would you base yourself in?
We will be in Warsaw first overnight train the Munich.
I like Nuremberg for the medieval and history mix. SO thinks Munich and travel to Nuremberg.

Lived in Munich for a long time up until a year and a half ago.
Munich city is bigger than Nürnberg.
Nürnberg city walls are nice and the centre has a medieval feel to it and it doesn't really take much more than a day to explore. Munich, in the other hand, is larger and its buildings generally on a much grander scale.
Both cities have nice beer gardens, yet Nürnberger beer is more varied.
Biergarten in Englisch Garten, Waldwirtschaft (WaWi) if you fancy a stroll south along the river (my recommendation, good Weißbier there, too, not so keen on the Helles they have) or Augustiner on Arnulf Str if you're in town.
If the weather is shitty there are lots of museums in München to keep you entertained, or just go to Augustinerkeller on Kaufingerstr and drink Augustiner.
Nürnberg has the Albrecht Dürer Museum and obviously the (former) Reichspartiegeländer which is interesting but not sure if there's enough to do for a whole day.
Nürnberg's surrounding countryside is pretty, but not sure how accessible it is with public transport.
However, a 35-45 min train ride south of Munich gets you to Tegernsee or Schliersee which gives you those quintessential German stereotypes of mountains, beer and Lederhosen. Bräustüberl am Tegernsee is a nice place to sit on a sunny day with a few nice easy walks conveniently ending there.
A day trip to Nürnberg makes more sense than a day trip to Munich.

I'm in Augsburg and am working 4 days a month in Nuremberg and would agree with Alpin's comments.
Nuremberg is a day trip but would add that a trip to Augsburg is worth making.

Fuggerstadtler.... Underrated little city, Augsburg!
From Munich the Disney Castle (aka Neuschwanstein) or Chiemsee with its island Palace/Schloß are only an hour or so by train.
Berghof, that iconic place where Hitler used to hang out, is also doable on the train in a day.

Odeonsplatz was where the Beer Hall Putsch fight took place.... Not much has changed and you can recognise it from old photos.
The nazis put up a memorial for it's martyrs and insisted that everyone passing should give the salute. There's a small alley behind it and those who didn't want to give the salute would go there, Drückebergergasse.

Likewise there is Terme Erding on the outskirts of Munich... I think they've got saunas for the non-locals so you don't have to show everyone your penis.
However, if that is your thing there's always the Englisch Garten or the gravel banks along the Isar (Flaucher! Nice Biergarten there, too. Fortunately it's not FKK). Worth a gander just for the shitzngiggles
I have to disagree about Nuremburg being a day trip. In addition to those couple of bits mentioned, theres a castle, underground tunnel tour, railway museum, compact litte red light district, Hitlers Zeppelin field and museum a short ride on the tram and if you want to depress yourselves go to Dachau on the train.
Munich is ace too to be fair.
Dachau is next to Munich.
But I agree... Depressing. In all the years I lived there not once did I consider going.
Nürnberg has the massive parade grounds.
Munich has the Deutsches Museum which is gigantic and needs several trips to do it justice.in fact it's the world's largest tech and science museum, with massive displays of just about everything and anything. Nice roof top bar up top, too...
Suggest you just go for drinks during the day as the food wasn't all that for the money, but the view is great.
Two other locations in Munich house a transport museum and an aviation museum.
Also quite a few arty museums, but I've only done jobs there as it's not my thing.
I worked a lot in Munich at fully agree with what Alpin said: Munich is a big city with lots to see and do and fabulous countryside nearby. It has a great city local rail service (the S-bahn). The city centre is very good for biking and walking. It is well worth considering a visit to Dachau: easily accessible on the S-bahn.
If you end up staying in Nuremberg then you must visit Bamberg. It's a really picturesque town.

Indeed but it's not intended to be uplifting. Mind you it's probably 60 years ago that I was taken there by my parents, so I don't know what the experience will be like now. Hopefully no different.
