Get a meal in the Loewenbrau brewery. Epic beer and epic food.

The dunkel beers are my fave.

Was there last weekend. Friday night at the loewenbrau (102 steins on the tab 😯 ) and all day Saturday at the frulingfest. Whoever decided to put a beer tent inside a fun fair is a genius. Dodgems after a 9hr session is brilliant 😀

Fruhlings fest, that's the one 😉

From yesterday's session, we counted up over 100 kriegen (Stein) between 12 of us so near on 20 pints a piece.

Not stopped laughing all weekend, got to know people from all over the world, and the locals were brilliant hosts.

Absolutely superb!

Not been this year (I used to live in Munich so have been to both fests in the past) but managed to locate some Augustiner Helles in a shop yesterday so had some of that instead.

Löwenbräu is Munich's equivalent of Fosters... it's proper pish. Augustiner, Hacker, Spaten or Tegernseer.... Altobräu, Grafinger are also worth looking out for.

Paulaner is also one to avoid, IMO.

and yes, Dunkel ist besser.... but again, not Löwenbräu's offering. their Urtyp is drinkable but i always end up with a real shitty headache the next morning if i've had more than one.

oh, and to be pedantic a litre of beer is a Maß, a Stein (or krug) is a clay mug.

and Munich is AWESOME... i live here. and yes, the proper Oktoberfest, or Weisn, (just five sober minutes from me, bit longer on the way home) is great the first few times you go. i now go on holiday when it's on to avoid the sick soaked pavements and trains.

Just had a flashback from chatting to a local fella and he picked me up on that, cheers for reminding me. 😉

We asked for Steins when we first went in to the indoor tent and the waiter looked at us as if we had 3 heads 😆

Oh and I enjoyed the Paulaner, wasn't as keen on the stuff in the indoor tent (A.B??)

PS - out of all the groups of people who were there, only one group were being nobs - no prizes for guessing their nationality...

Not been for a while, after living there for 2 years. Anybody know if Gunter Murphy's is still going?. Used to be my second home.

Epicsteve!
Where did you find Augustiner? I've never found it in the Uk.
Definitely my favourite Munich beer.

Gunter's in Schwabing went a long time ago as far as I know.
They found an old WW2 bomb under the site of the Schwabinger Seiben too.

If you are going for the first time, a trip to the Englischer Garden is nice, get a few beers at the Chinese tower.

hmmm Edelstoffe, lovely.

Even though I've been back here with the inselaffe for the last 10 years, I can't help but think of Munich as home. Loved it.
I actually prefered Fruhlingsfest too.

Superfli,
I've stayed at Alpenrider in Kirchberg for a lads trip a couple of years ago. It was a bit basic but cheap enough. The guy who runs it is about 8' tall - seriously - great bloke but you wouldn't want to mess with him.
Check out the Boomerang Bar in Kirchberg. They usually have a half-descent live band on.

Definitely my favourite Munich beer.

It was just in a little booze shop that's opened in Linlithgow - had some 200 different beers. Got some Hacker as well as the Augustiner. They didn't have Edelstof but I recommended the chap get some in as it's the best beer on the planet IMHO.

Usually I get my Augustiner from Beers of Europe on the web.

Anybody know if Gunter Murphy's is still going?

If it's the Irish bar in the University part of the town, it was a couple of years ago.

We're off next year for our 50th, can't wait, we're going in June because the last time we went in March they had a couple of foot fall on the Friday.

The Hofbrauhaus was amazing, can recommend the Spetzle.
