Looking to do the middle marathon at this event but have no real idea of the terrain. I live I. The Chilterns so get lots of mud and short but quite steep climbs / descents.

Can anyone who knows the locality advise what to expect.

Cheers

Pym

Similar, lots & lots of hills, short and steep & some bigger ones. Can't speak about any Mtb course but been through the area a few times. Beware the locals if you mis-pronounce the name and they generally don't use the wells bit, so it's just 'bilth'
Happy trails.

Is 45k a marathon?

I remember the days when they were over 100k or nothing. 😉

Done this a couple of years ago, don't remember it being too taxing, no climbs worse than the Ruthin marathon. It did properly throw it down all the way around so there was plenty of mud. Enjoyed it though, which is the point.

55k (not the night ride of 44k) Hence "middle" marathon rather than full marathon. I make no claims of superhero status, just looking for a nice ride in an area I don't know.

Do you have to be a "superhero" to ride your bike 60 miles these days?

I think not. 😛

Anyone cycling 100k off road impresses me - but I am an old, overweight ex smoker with an ego I must have lost somewhere.

By the way where are you guys getting the smilies from. I can't see how to access them from this page.

You have your own personel haterist.

awsumz.

By the way where are you guys getting the smilies from

They hand the smilies out to anyone that has finished a full marathon on a singlespeed. 😉

Mrs ssstu got her smilies handed to her on the finish line by John Lloyd.

No need to thank me.

As you cross the line just look for John and he'll have all the smilies in a bucket waiting for the awsumz ssers.

Maybe if you speak to him he'll give you a couple just for the hell of it.
