Youre wrong.
Actually it sounds pretty right to me but I always say mountain bike in my head.
Yup, MTB = Mountain bike
Yep, Mountain Bike. But Multi-Terrain Bike makes more sense what with the erroneous T
The Erroneous T.. my new favourite rapper 😀
Now this is how to start an argument. 🤣
Yup,you are wrong, you posted this in chat 😉🤣👍
Now this is how to start an argument.
Oh no it's not!
No it isn’t, “tout” is French for “all.”
Isn't that what they're saying? That it's an acronym like MTB = multi-terrain bicycle.
Anyway...
Mountain bike for me. None of this "bicycle" business 😉
Always thought of it more as an abbreviation rather than an acronym.
Nowadays ATB is an acronym for "hybrid type BSO" anyway.
Particularly when it was originally ATB but some smart arse probably pointed out it can’t be ‘All’ if you can’t ride on water, hot lava, etc.
I distinctly remember an early 90s copy of MBUK where they rode underwater with diving gear on.
(In fact I think it was the second issue I ever bought in 1993!).
Yeah, but Enduro sounds better... 😉
I thought Raleigh called their bikes ATB's because they thought someone had the copyright on MTB?
This was back circa 1989 when I got into mountain biking and MTB has always stood for Mountain Bike, since then at least.
The article was bog snorkelling wasn't it?
it’s an
acronym
Initialism, an acronym would form a word. Such as ICE - Internal combustion engine.
Gravel bikes are ATB, MTB is mountain bikes, no one wants to ride a mountain bike on tarmac
MTB is mountain bikes, no one wants to ride a mountain bike on tarmac
Which is where the name originates: for mountin' the kerb. Moun Tin Bike, MTB. (Though strictly speaking it should be MT Rig.)
I had a ridgeback in 84 I think. Pretty sure that was an mtb, but Raleigh had atbs about the same time. Don't think I've ever said ATB outside a discussion about ATB vs mountain bike.
To be fair I've never said mtb either, just written it shorthand.
Who cares?
I think the test is to go into a bike shop and ask for an ATB and see what they say
"What do I do with my old 26's?"
This has come up before.
I questioned it because most people seem to say something like 'I have an mtb' which if you don't shorten it as in, 'I have an mountainbike' it isn't right.
It should be, 'I have a mtb'
But then that sounds weird too.
Man, it's a crazy world.
Initialism, an acronym would form a word. Such as ICE – Internal combustion engine.
Excellent pedantry.
Oh no it’s not!
I dunno, seems to be warming up nicely.
If you’re calling out pedantry. MTB is an initialism not an acronym. 😉
If you’re calling out pedantry, you're 15 minutes late.
Mountainous(ish) Terrain Bicycle
Such as ICE – Internal combustion engine.
Nah, that'll forever mean "In Car Entertainment" for me - Fiestas, parcel shelfs and Alpine 6x9s, etc.
ATB - All Terrain Bike
VVT - the Frenchie equivalent of ATB
MTB - MounTain Bike
ebike - moped
That should warm it up further.

Nope.
VVT is what Honda does to its sporty engines.
VTT is what the French do in the mountains.
I'm just waiting for Charlie Kelly to turn up.
Anyway, MountainBikes was Charlie, Gary Fisher, and Tom Ritchey's company that produced whatever the generic name for mountain bikes was back then.
So for a time it was a company name (although possibly never trademarked) so it would make sense for Raleigh (and other companies) to call them something other than mountain bikes.
@Kramer, dammit.
https://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/MTB
I like the potential double meaning of MTB from that list: Maximum Therapeutic Benefit 😀
Such as ICE – Internal combustion engine.
Immigration and Custom Enforcement - US border patrol.
You are wrong.
ATB = VTT
MTB is mountain biking.
Now for me ICE will always be associated with the German Inter City Express trains. And the letters are always pronounced individually as I C E and not the as the word for frozen water.
Sadly you are wrong but so is MTB as the real name is ATB. Doubt most MTB riders even know what a mountain is let alone ride their bikes up them.
VVT is what Honda does to its sporty engines.
Toyota do VVT - Honda do i-VTEC! 🤪

Touché 🤣
ebike – moped

@a11y 👍😉
Ah,Raleigh, they almost saw the future.Dual Power
Now for me ICE will always be associated with the German Inter City Express trains.
It's also Intrusion Countermeasure Electronics, hence the exchange in the dogshit film Hackers (paraphrasing), "my ICE is better than yours."
Multi-terrain bike.
If you check Wikipedia in a couple of minutes, you'll find it completely agrees with me.
😂
Perhaps it’s confusion/conflation with All-Terrain Bicycle (ATB)? That was popular for a while, especially with the pedants not actually going up mountains.
Yeah but mountain sounds cooler, more dynamic.
All terrain could mean the tow path beside the old canal. yawn boringggg. but Mountain Phowww thats cool, thats pro.
no one wants to ride a mountain bike on tarmac
err….I do. I have one bike and ride it everywhere. You can ride what you want almost wherever you want. That’s why it stands for Most Terrain Bike.
Choose a flavour 😉 😜
Mincing Terrain Bike.
Mild Terrain Bike.
Mushy Terrain Bike.
Multi-terrain bike.
Sounds a bit limiting.
I'd rather have an ATB that can literally ride on all terrainses.
Middle-aged Tosser Bike
Excellent, I've found the rest of the inhabitants of my dad's 'PIN number rage' echo chamber 😀
Middle-aged Tosser Bike
Oi, I resemble that remark.
Now for me ICE will always be associated with the German Inter City Express trains. And the letters are always pronounced individually as I C E and not the as the word for frozen water.
Incorrect. It would be pronounced E C A
Cos that's how Germans pronounce their vowels.
Mahoosive Tyre Bike
