I have the dictionary set to English (U.K.): and Custom.Dic (default) ticked, yet it insists on using the US dictionary and tells me words like apologise are spelt incorrectly. Can anyone point me in the direction of sorting this out please. It's most annoying.

have a look at
Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools -> Language Settings (or similar)

you can add / remove languages here and set default (called set primary editing language on my version)

just had a look in Word at the bottom of the screen a language will be shown...mine says United Kingdom...clicking this gives you option to set default....

combination of these should get it sorted...quite a while since I had this problem but these things got it sorted.

fubar

Thanks. Just clicked the language at the bottom of the screen as you suggested, changed that to UK and it's sorted. I've never had this before, must have slipped through on the install after new hard drive fitted.
