Since my last post I have been trying to improve my mpg some based on tips given here and some based on the internet (hypermilers odd bunch)

I have increased it by an entire 12 mpg , im up to 52 mpg and over the past week havent managed to get more than that

Since doing this more sedate driving I have noticed that several things occur

You have so much more time to react.

you are far less stressed bimbling along.

You can drive to the speed limits and under them (shock horror).

You do actually get to your destination within a similar timeframe to the previous get there at all costs driving mode.

I think it would be pretty difficult to run over pedestratians cyclists ,baby robins. There so much time to notice and observe actual other road users rather than trying to keep up with the jones and arrive at the roundabout traffic lights at the same time anyway.

I regularly drive to and from work at a max of 60mph, have become a bit of a joke among the 'petrolheads' at work who like to 'make progress', but I find that it is a much more pleasurable experience than trying to keep up with all the other morons on the road. Unless you are driving a very long way, the time lost from driving slower is negligible.

Well there is "making progress" and there is being a total arse.

Donkeys years ago I used to navigate on rallies for a friend. Against the clock the red mist came down. When not competing he saw no reason to race around like a lunatic but he did seem to be able to traverse large distances quickly and comfortably without forever jumping on and off the throttle and brake. Probably a lot to do with competing in Group 1.

That's because BMW's can actually go round corners pretty well compared to most cars on the road, where as an Audi has to slam the anchors on as they are quite hideous at going round corners.

Ps OP, just to pee you off a bit, I routinely get 60mpg out of my BMW, sometimes even 80mpg, and I still get to catch up mere mortals in their excuse for cars trying to get to 50mpg 😛

I drive pretty sedately normally. Not slowly but I've always aimed for 'smooth' - no sharp braking, turning or accelerating. Habit I picked up from riding motorbikes.

If you keep your head up and look out in front you can be smooth and still fast.

To be fair, I'd cottoned on to most of your recent epiphanies by the time I was done with puberty. Shock horror you can save juice and stay relaxed by driving slower.

You also have absolutely no control over other peoples behaviour. If they want to be a dick, let them go about their dickish business. You just do your thing and chill out.

Most of the BMW drivers I end up behind on the way into work tend to favour the 'approach a corner way too quick, then brake round the entire corner' technique, which is exactly how all the really quick drivers do it...... 🙄 😆

I bought it because they look nice, are a pleasure to drive, reliable, well made and practical (can get a bike in the boot)I get 41 mpg which is ridiculous for a car like that capable of 0-60 in 6 seconds and limited to 155mph but capable of doing 175 ish. But then I drive properly and use my brakes sparingly and accelerate moderately. I am proud of the fact I have been driving for 28 years and do not have a single point on my licence. I never break the speed limit and use my cruise control a lot in certain zones so I cannot go over the speed limit. Never in rush to go anywhere as I always give myself more time than needed to get to where I am going.
In my opinion there are good and bad drivers regardless of the cars they drive and I do not tolerate those that drive up my back end.

3.2 v6 with dsg gets you a smooth fast drive... also slick streaming is a must for me to try and achieve a figure closer to 27mpg than high teens.

As also mentioned I ride motorbikes and I think they teach you to drive more smoothly and read conditions better than most car drivers do... infact if anyone cycles on the road I think they are usually a more considerate driver on average.

Nothing wrong with making progress even if in reality you end up roughly in the same place at the same time.. I drive like a saint in a van though but just can't bring myself to go that slow in a car.

I've got a 320d M Sport and have an average of 50mpg over the last year of commuting to work down country lanes at maximum velocity, doesn't make any difference if I sit on the bumper of the car in front, shoot round corners or drive like Miss Daisy 😆

There's a particular roundabout near to me that normally has a queue, one to three hundred meters long. It goes - stop - 20 - stop - 10 - stop etc. I get bored with this so allow a short gap in front of me, then cruise along at the average. It seems to work, and I save a bit on fuel, clutch and brakes.

I commend this solution to the house.

I am genuinely curious to know what the point of having such a potentially quick car with a large engine is, over something perhaps a bit less potent?
Is it just a case of this is the best engine available for the car, or perhaps it is the smallest engine available for that car? I am not particularly familiar with the car/engine ranges from BMW, so perhaps that is it.
Or do you use it to tow a caravan, so need the torque of a large diesel?

You mention the car being capable of 0-60 in 6 seconds, but then
say you accelerate moderately? It's capable of 155mph limited but you never break the speed limit....

I've never been in a position to own a car with an engine that powerful, but am not sure why I'd choose one if I wasn't going to make use of the performance that I have paid for, unless there was no other choice of engine for that model of car & I wanted that particular model of car....

I do not tolerate those that drive up my back end.

haha - I do this. I'm on a 40mph road and if tailgated often start my slowing down a long way before my house. Then pull to the middle and reverse in - slowly.

I've always preferred cars with bigger engines but am generally a very relaxed driver.

I prefer the cruising capability of the bigger engine, the fact it can get you up to speed on slip roads quickly and you never feel as though you need more power when you need it to overtake.

I had a company car 1.6 TDI golf for a couple of years and it was more than capable of keeping pace with daily life but there was always the nagging feeling in my head when I went to overtake that I have no more power to help if something ahead changes.

implies you're not keeping that good a look out!

As it happens, I drive a BMW, it's got more power than average (not a rocket ship, it's a 125d). What you tend to find in a more powerful car is that everything is so much more relaxed, it's just easy cruising especially with an auto box. I find the same in my wife's touareg, it could do 145mph, but bumbles along at 50mph without seeming to bother the engine or make any noise at all.
The only time the additional power comes in useful in the intended sense is making a safe overtake, there are more opportunities to get around someone doing 35mph when you've got a load of excess power than if you're diving a 1l petrol.

In fact I think the correct course of action is to gently slow down until the gap being left by the car behind is appropriate for the speed...... So yeah, basically.

*Enjoy: I stick to speed limits where necessary and hoon it where I think I can get away with it. I enjoy driving quickly and am seldom in a rush (so no pressure to do stupid things). I see plenty of idiots out there who really shouldn't have licences. I don't drive a BMW or Audi (yet). 😈

I have to admit I find this too, although also driving an older camper van is quite a stark contrast. Getting up to the speed limit in the car is far far easier / quieter / smoother - initially took a little adapting when switching between vehicles.

In traffic at a steady fifty, with a sensible gap in front sufficient (just) that one isn't affected by the ripples of braking heading back down the line: how does that work then? No, they can rush past and tailgate the next car.

If they are tailgating, I don't want to risk a whiplash injury, thanks, nor have my car written off. Nor have an insurance cost hike. Nor experience the hassle of sorting it all out. But I'll help make sure they are awake and alert, to reduce the risk of all those.

Round town, during the day, and most of the rest of the time, you're absolutely right. All you manage by foot to the floor driving is to get to the next queue faster, and use more fuel.

I would challenge the fact that it makes no difference whatever to timings though. I have been up north to just past Inverness a few times (in-laws live up there) and the average speed cameras on the A9 would add about 45 minutes to the journey time, compared to what I reckon you could achieve if you disregarded the speed limits but didn't overly risk life and limb (i.e. drive sensibly around junctions etc.). It does use more fuel to go faster, but then cycling uses no fuel and gets you there eventually. (On the other hand, there's been no fatalities since they introduced the average speed cameras, as overtaking on the single carriageway sections is rarely worth it)

I don't see cars, I see some good and some not so good drivers.

This is so obviously true and boring, but it took my 10 years driving to realise it.

I used to drive the same 4 junctions of the M4 every morning and every evening and being the young thrusting determined Man I am (okay, I get bored easy) I'd do so in lane 3, constantly accleraating to 85, then braking to 70, than 85, then 70.... etc etc etc to stop the 'arsehole' in lane 2 cutting in, and trying to get past the 'arsehole' in front holding me up - we were all 'arseholes' really.

After 6 months of this I calculated that if instead of doing that I stuck the cruise at 56mph in lane 1, I never had to change lanes because all the trucks went at 56 - I'd arrive for work about 6 minutes later and it saved me £70 a month in fuel. I arrvied a work happier, but more importantly I didn't arrive home all angry and short tempered.

As for cars, I think there's a certain character type who drive agressively and there's certain cars that appeal to them - lots of BWMs in the 90's as I recall, but until Clarkson started his attack on Audi drivers I never saw it, I've been tailgated by my far share of A3s, but the worst I've seen recently is Passat CCs and those Nissan SUV things, lots of tarted up T5s, but I think I've been tailgated by every type of car going by now.

because I was doing the national speed limit for that road 🙄 Im sure you are probably aware a combine harvester wont quite get 60 hence the highway code wording if your slower pull over.

what are you saying I barrel round the corner on a road I know well where there's a farm entrance/ exit at 60 just to satisfy some dick who would probably broadside a tractor doing 80 if he could get past.

It was only the other day a car hit something head on there becasue some idiot parked on the wrong side of the road where the farm entrance is , as you pull away from the farm you cannot see the actually road or if there's any traffic a blind corner becasue the farm juts out ,its a long 60mph country lane up to the bend and many get it wrong ,the mirror has been taken out so many times by tools doing a rally stage the farmer now exits through the field and doesnt use the yard.

I used to commute (as park of a car share) a few junctions on the M25. We were 4-up in my little Fiesta. It was a running joke I had my own private lane.

Similarly now, in congested motorway traffic, I'll move to the inside. Truck drivers can see further ahead and prefer to keep moving, even if it's very slowly, so appear to navigate congestion better. Works for me.

slowoldgit, gently lifting off is the accepted method (it's in the theory test iirc) of dealing with someone that's right up your arse. We're not talking about hitting the brakes here

On more than one occasion I've seen an Audi tail-gating a BMW (or vice-versa), it's a rare but beautiful thing, like a double rainbow. It's almost always a boggo A4 tdi or 320D for some reason.

Once I saw an an A4 tailgating a 3 series. To my absolute amazement another 3 series came rocketing up to the procession at well over the speed limit. The BM docked with the rear bumper of the Audi and for a brief but perfect period of time all 3 cars sped along together in unison. Like an automotive Human Centipede, except all the assholes were joined at the asshole. [i]Just then[/i]....like a bolt from the blue.....like Mjolnir answering Thor's outstretched arm....a Transit came flying up behind them briefly becoming part of this one in a million tosser parade before making them flee for the safety of the inner lanes lest they might anger a working class person. And like that, they were gone, like tears in the rain.

I cried.

It's worth bearing in mind that tailgaters are by definition very poorly skilled drivers, and probably not too bright.

To help prevent them damaging their expensive car if you have to brake suddenly, the decent thing to do is to slow down so that the gap is now a safe braking distance.

I regularly do this, and it seems to be appreciated because they wave enthusiastically at me when they get round to overtaking, and seem to be mouthing something like "Thank you very much".

It's polite to wave back, but for safety's sake just raising one finger from the wheel will do.

Indeed when I lived in London and occasionally drove to Leeds to see GF and my family at the weekend, I initially tried the outside lane, then realised there was no point (not even 6 minute's worth) as you were just up to 90, back down to 40 or 50, up to 90 again. Middle and/or inner lanes were if anything faster on average, and far smoother.

The number of people that will speed up to block up a gap when you indicate so you don't "win" (in their mind only) never ceases to amaze me. As does the number of people on a quiet motorway who will tailgate you in the inner lane if you're pootling along instead of just overtaking. If only everyone was as skillful as I am at driving!

Sometimes one can just slightly change speed, gently up and down, meaning a gap opens up behind, they accelerate to catch up then brake as they're too close, then feedback sets in, like a horizontal yo-yo.

If I'm in a bimbling mood and someone clearly wants to go faster than me unless they're just going to end up in traffic round the next corner I'll make sure they can get past at the next sensible place, I see no reason to hold someone up. I do have a regularly have a good hoon myself though.

This is common with my honda people don't get that theyr'e running out of puff just as mines coming in not so good for power but rolling roads ,thyre really nice little cars till you need them not to be

Put the ETA on the screen on your satnav, that drive home a point about not making much difference to the arrival time if you gun it.

Back off the accelerator whenever the car is going down a slope - if I drive my wifes RAV4 I like to put the mpg up on the display and see how high I can get it on a run.

Don't worry about cars tailgating you, just worry about your gap to the car in front. If someone is being pushy behind then just delight in the 'inconvenience' you are causing, as long as you are not driving unreasonably slow - like test-fail type slow.

Fwiw, I see more knobs in Beemers than Audis, but driving like a dick is by no means an exclusive privilege endowed on anyone who drives a car by either of those two manufacturers.
Far worse are those who are of the belief that they have the right to set whatever speed limit they decree to be safe, which is, generally speaking, between ten and twenty mph below whatever is posted, except in a 30 zone, where they do 35-40; above that, it's usually 40mph everywhere, leading to a queue of frustrated drivers who just want to get somewhere a bit quicker, thank you.
I've followed a Merc 230 Kompressor coupé along a road with a 60 limit, on a warm, sunny day*, at between 35-38, according to the very accurate digital speedo on my Puma, and they were braking for every slight bend in the road. I used to drive the same road at 55-60 in a '55 split-screen Morris Minor, with a 1300 A-series fitted.
This just leads to frustration, attempts to overtake at inappropriate places, and is just unnecessary in a modern car with performance tyres fitted.
Hell, my Octavia is faster.
*The driver did have the roof down, so possibly she didn't want to disturb her hair-do too much before her lunch appointment in Bath...

If it's clear, its not fun, it's just driving. If it's busy, it's stressful. 130 on a clear motorway is a bit more fun, but still boring after a while (and yes I have done it).

I assumed inappropriate meant dangerous. If someone gets frustrated behind a slow vehicle, and then does a dangerous overtake - it's absolutely categorically the overtaker's fault. A driver needs to be able to deal with frustration - public roads have all sorts of traffic on them, that's a fact of life with which you need to deal.

As for caravanning - you're saying that I should be prevented from holidaying the way I want because you want to drive 10mph faster - THAT's selfish. At least half the time when I'm on a windy country road with the caravan I'm being held up by someone else going even slower without a caravan. Nervous driver, older driver, incompetent driver, good vehicle... You DO NOT have the right to drive fast, and you should not expect it - caravans are just one slower vehicle you might encounter. If you're impatient, that's your problem - you can wait for a straight or wait for me to pull over. Which I will, cos I'm considerate. If another caravan driver is not, then that's an inconsiderate road user, another common type that you encounter.

But what about distance? If you drive from London to say the Lakes, I could drive from Cardiff to West Wales and you'd probably use more fuel.

Then again.. I get 32mpg with the caravan on, you going to ban anyone who wants to go on holiday in a van? Motorhome? That nice Porsche? But that Porsche driver drives that all year round, I only take the van out three or four times a year, it only does a few hundred miles.

Ban that lot as well on environmental grounds you might have my support!

Countzero, you hit the nail on the head for me. I drive to work on country lanes and pass through a small town. It's such a frustration when you get morons who seem to just do 40mph regardless of whether it's 30mph or national speed limit, especially when they catch up with you in said town after you overtook them 3 miles back.
My view, people make complaints not the cows. This is also Darwin's county, so drive like a moron and let natural selection be your destiny, not misfortune somebody else's.
