What sort of mpg is this engine capable of with fuel-conscious driving on a motorway trip?
The car is a seat leon 1.9tdi 130bhp model, 8 years old and 100k miles. Is 50 mpg a decent return?
I have a golf gt tdi 130 and 50mpg is easily achievable, although it has only done 50k mile.
On the motorway it returns around 54mpg. Taking it easy on a-roads it can get upto and above 60mpg 🙂
50mpg's fairly good.
I recently did a 500 mile motorway trip to Manchester and back (towing a 500kg trailer ont he way back) and got 55mpg overall in my Renault 1.9Dci.
That's the exception, though. Normally seem to average about 40mpg around town (average speed less than 20mph).
Another thing to add, I notice an approx 5mpg swing between the summer months and winter months. Summer being the higher reading
in my old 1.9 Diesel Ibiza i used to get over 60mpg. not a TDI, although i think the TDI is more efficient - i might be wrong.
i was driving like an extreme version of my old man. very gentle on the accelerator pedal. timing each junction. cruising at 60mph.
i liked that car...

I've got a 2003 Golf TDI 130, 103k miles, I've had a 50mpg average over the last 5k miles, got 61 on a recent 400 mile motorway trip. Not driving overly carefully. Even driving like a loon I tend to get 40 or so.
44 on an semi urban commute. Seen 55 from a run
Same engine in both a A3 Quattro and passat estate.
Quattro averages ~40
Passat averages ~48
passat has done 150k, A3 70k.
I notice a difference between winter and summer in my diesel Smart, I've always put it down to the increased electrical load (lights, heater etc) in the winter, but air temperature and road conditions must play a part too.
A4 Avant 1.9 TDi here: 55mpg on long journeys; 45-48mpg the rest of the time.
VW Bora, 1.9TDI 130.
2003, 110K.
63mpg on long motorway runs. 53mpg day-to-day.
I've a Golf 1.9tdi (the humble 105 version) and that's running about 55mpg on my usual commute.
My old VW Golf wasn't that great. Think it was a 2000 model 115 tdi pd engine, even in those 50mph average speed sections on the motorway (flat, constant speed, light touch on accelerator) it would only get 50mpg ish.
Interesting variation from cars with the same engine. Must admit mine's a 'computer' MPG, never been geeky enough to actually work it out!
Tend to get c500-530 miles on a tank before the warning light comes on, which is about 50 litres.
Mine did have a 'wobble' lately, where it got a lot worse for a while, then improved again. It had a service in the middle of the low period, but didn't instantly improve afterwards!
Interesting variation from cars with the same engine.
probably more the driving style than the car.
My A3 is a little rocket, the passat a great big comfy bus that doesnt react well to being pushed along so you tend to bimble.
A4 avant with the same engine here (130bhp 6 speed) - I never seem to get more than 43mpg - even on a run, though that is a real fill-to-fill calculation. I think there's something wrong as I don't particularly hoof it, but everyone seems to get better. The engine's on 149k, which may or may not be an issue.
It's still a revelation compared to the 22mpg of my old V6 quattro though!
I have the 100bhp variant . Always get over 50mpg on a run , and up to 55mpg on the computer . My computer undereads though , as fill to fill checks generally see 1 -2 mpg more. Subtract 3-4mpg for depth of winter driving .
Engine nicely run in at 287,000
Pootle about at 60mph most places in a 2001 Passat TDI 130bhp, it's just turned 153,000 miles, my overall average on the computer is 43mpg, so maybe mine needs some work other than the regular oil change.
My 2.0 petrol Bora does mid 40s on the motorway.
I've got the 150bhp variant in exactly the same car. Same age and same mileage. 50-54mpg is usual for motorway/A9 runs without driving too conservatively. 40-45 on the commute.
It has been a great car but check that the timing belt has been done on a 60000/4yr schedule.
Mine is starting to cost a bit as original suspension components wear out so it's worth checking for clunks and rattles (broken spring, worn strut mount bearings, worn bushings).
best i got out of my octavia 1.9 90bhp was an indicated 71mpg, cheltenham to chester. Normal was high 50's/low 60's
I have had both a Gold and Ibiza tdi. The Golf was a 90bhp and the Ibiza was a 130, chipped to 180!!!!
The Golf did easily 55mpg combined every day all day.
The Seat on the other hand was about 48mpg combined. I could get it to mid 50's but it was a real struggle.
Remind me why 'trip computer' mpg readings are supposed to be inaccurate? The car should know how much fuel it's using and presumably if the distance reading is inaccurate you'd have the same error if you measured the fuel from the garage pump.
Ive got a mk4 tdi 150 and see a minimum of 50mpg at 70mph most Ive had is 72mpg but that was going so slow.
Its now on 169k and has had a lot of money spent on replacing parts (clutch/flywheel, cam shafts, turbo, bushes, cv joints etc) but its been remapped to 195bhp for the last 100k and goes like shit of a shovel 😈
simons_nicolai-uk Ive found the trip computer to be accurate to +-5% when working mpg out the old fashioned way
Been very happy with ours as well. Timing belt is done and generally it's been v light on repair costs. Think it's due to be put out to pasture in the near future, though. 2 kids now so I feel ready to assert my singletrackworld credentials and buy a skoda octavia estate.stuartie_c - MemberI've got the 150bhp variant in exactly the same car. My ibiza is the 90bhp version. Before this week's MOT I did a fill to fill calculation and it worked out roughly 55mpg. That's with a brisk drive to work followed by easy driving on the way home.20 or so miles each way with a mix of dual carriageways (10 miles of it) and a bit of everything else for the remainder.
It should do better now its been lightened up ;O) It's just had the abs system removed. <fingers crossed for good weather and safe driving>
Best I had from my 110bhp 1.9 Octavia was on a 300 mile trip along the M4/M25 at a steady indicated 70, where the computer showed 63.8, but I regularly average 55-57 on steady A-road runs and 45 or so around town. I get around 500 miles from a tank which is around 48-50ltr. Needs a service, and it's started making a funny droning noise when turning right and breaking, which sounds like a bearing of some sort.
I'm averaging 47.3 on my 51 Passat 130 tdi, got 53 on a trip to Kingussie a few weeks ago.
217K on the clock.
My mk4 Golf 1.9tdi 130bhp Estate has clocked 100k & the last 50k the comp. has recorded an avg mpg of 49mpg and that is mostly on short runs, if I take it on the motorway I can hit an avg of 65mpg or 700 miles to the tank!
Interesting variation from cars with the same engine
There are loads of very different VAG engines labelled 1.9 TDI - ranging from the first electronic engines they made to PD, to piezo PD to new common rail ones with DPF with different bits attached to them, different tunes and in very different cars too.
I notice a difference between winter and summer in my diesel Smart
In the winter, they have to put more anti-gel stuff in the diesel which reduces the power it produces in the engine. So everyone's mpg goes down in the winter. Plus the weather is typically worse - standing water on the roads harms economy and it's often windier in winter too.
Remind me why 'trip computer' mpg readings are supposed to be inaccurate?
They vary - Ford seem to be the worst, but my Passat and my Prius are both pretty accurate.
Got a 6 year old 105bhp 1.9tdi Octavia estate with the 6 spd dsg autobox, 65k on the clock - averaged 55mpg over the weekend over 450 mixed miles travelling to and around Wrexham, and it was fully loaded up (for reasons only MrsMCTD can understand)
Figures normally are around what Cammer said up the top
Ibiza FR 1.9 TDI 130, 05 plate ~50k miles
I get 40-45mpg usually, more on longer drives on motorways.
Can eek out 50-55mpg if I want to, never had much over 55mpg though, even trying hard & doing around 55-60mph
I do like to test the car's performance within the legal limits from time to time too
1995 Audi A6 1.9TDI on 275k miles = 45mpg, even with a boat behind.
Oh - and we used to get a long term just over 40 on our golf estate 105. Nearly all motorway, always had roof bars and fork mount racks. Rarely without at least 2 bikes.
Just serviced and replaced auxilliary belt tensioner and alternator pully and new thermostat on my 1998 Passat 110Tdi (180000 miles)and its now averaging 55mpg up from 48mpg!!
Same car as 4ndy B above, but the older Sport variant.130 Tdi 1.9
Normal driving on A roads and not booting it too much gets me a whisker under 55mpg. Driving recently with an eye to economy and doing 60 mph most of the time gets me 60-63mpg.
Full car with 2 bikes on the roof hoofing down to Cornwall and I got about 44mpg.
