I have always used the Sandisk Clip sport mp3/mp4 players as I dont need anything special, they have served me very well.

I am looking at getting something different this time around, mainly because I want something with a bigger screen and larger buttons. I have no interest in using my phone and streaming not required. Nothing expensive as I use them whilst out walking and cycling.

Any recommendations for something decent?

You have to be into fettling with stuff but the route I took was an old iPod (now cheap) loaded with www.rockbox.org firmware to avoid the apple ecosystem. You get the nice physical interface and a decent DAC.

You can get even more in depth and open it up to fit a larger battery and replace the disc drive with one of these modules for mega battery life and storage. www.iflash.xyz

Some people go as far as fitting bluetooth but that requires a bit of physical surgery as the metal back blocks the antenna.

Failing that maybe Sony?

I usually spend £30 to £40. Only because I am only using it whilst walking (or riding when I can) and I have lost one or two in the past.

My choice is iPod Classic/Nano. On ebay can find whatever suits your budget and size needs. Classic is a good choice cos it's easy to replace the battery and the disk for large capacity cards.
Nano 6th gen for portability, or 7th for larger screen and touch screen buttons (+bluetooth). Ipod Touch battery life can be v poor.
Not sure if you're after physical buttons... probably stick with Sandisk.
