Gardeners... I had turf laid about 3.5 weeks ago - it's been well watered and has grown like crazy - prob 15-20cm long now, and struggles to stay upright once something has been laid across it (like a hose for example). I'm assuming the roots have taken hold...

Can I mow it now? Or is it still too young? I've not even dared step on it yet! One of the strips of turf hasn't quite grown to the same extent, but it's still pretty darn long...

Laid turf in april, similarly once may frost passed it grew like buggery, so mowed after 4 weeeks, it's looking good. Grass is bloody hard wearing, some folk like to make out that it's easily killed, which isn't the reality at all.

I mow it every week, but have the blade set high, scalping it isn't good.

I was told I could cut at 5-6 weeks when we had turf laid two years ago. If it has grown that much I would have thought the roots have taken well. Just don’t take too much off first few times

Grab some of the grass and give it a gentle tug. If it doesn’t immediately lift up then mow it on the highest setting you can.

I had the same problem recently, laid it and it grew like crazy. I’ve had trouble keeping it short enough that all of it grows properly..

I got this badly wrong a couple of years back. Similar story, 1 month in and big long lush grass. Cut it (too low down in retrospect) and it grew back ok, cut it again .... and then it got really threadbare, took an age to get anything like good and even now it's never been quite as good as hoped.

I'd say leave it for a bit longer!

I’d probably give it a light now - I.e don’t take much off it. That’s assuming if you pull it a bit that it doesn’t feel like it lifting the turf up easily anyway.

I’d then keep mowing it with just a bit off for a while to encourage it to grow and really take root. Mowing it too short too early will knacker it.

Top stuff, thanks. I've not got a mower - was gonna strim..!

I'll give it a tug, see how it is, and try and nab a mower from a neighbour (it's only a small patch)

Don’t remove more than a third of the length. Give it a light trim.

If grass grows its got roots?? it's alive when it comes so you can cut it anytime as long as you don't cut it too short to get dried out by the sun.

Canny control how much you're taking off.
