Anyone here from Lincoln or nearby? I've been offered a job in North Hykeham and I'm looking for advice on...

 Where to live?

Looking for 1-2 bed, ideally with a garage and outside space. Alternatively, if anybody knows of a room for rent in a bike friendly house, i could be interested! Ideally no more than 30mins drive or bike from North Hykeham.

Where to go biking?

The Peaks is an hour or so away. Is there anything closer to home for the mountain bike? There are the Lincolnshire Wolds which look promising.

im in lincoln mate, or a village just outside anyway......

hykehams fine, its like a large suburb of lincoln now, plenty of nice enough areas.  youll be working south-west of the city then, so i wouldnt look at any of the properties/villages to the north, as youll just have the commute from one side of the city to the other.  not nice.  altho depending on whereabouts in hykeham youll be working you may strike lucky with the bypass.

pretty much all of the villages to the south are nice to live in, i live in one of them and can give you any info on the area if you want to mail me.  address in profile......

as for biking, the peaks is more than an hour away realistically, nearer two for the good stuff.  the wolds are a little nearer but youre probably nearer to sherwood pines actually.

like i say, mail me for any more info 🙂

You're only around 35-45mins for Sherwood  Pines.

We quite like the cycle route that runs from our neck of the woods (Clumber) down across the Trent, and you can carry on to woodall spa.

There was a recent thread on Lincoln. It's a nice city, although the riding isn't brilliant - wolds are OK over Louth way, and Sherwood or the Peaks is the closest 'real' mountainbiking.

As above, live south of Lincoln (Navenby, Boothby Grafoe, along the A607 for easy commute in) Avoid heading north towards Gainsborough.

Nice city, but 'proper' biking is very limited, I left Lincolnshire for the Tweed Valley.

Very dry there though, I miss the weather, if not the topography

If you ride road you'll be very well catered for, especially if you are a TT rider.

Mountain biking as above.

Try Witham St Hughs; 10 minutes cycling to Hykeham (cycle lane all the way), lots of new builds going up, more than 5k of gravel/dual use footpaths round the estate (likely to double in the next few years).

From Hykeham you can cycle into Lincoln off road and there are a few longer routes out.

Lincolnshire is a bit of a backwater, but that's why I like it.

I'm in Newark so only 20 mins away from Lincoln but feel it has the added benefit of being closer to Nottingham and train links etc.

Mountain biking as above and over the past two years ive gone to 90% road riding. I really enjoy the Lincolnshire roads, plenty with very few cars and some nice rolling hills in the wolds.

Witham St Hughes is nice and a bit cheaper than Newark or Lincoln but obviously a little distance away.

As others have said if you want any local advice just drop me a message.

I regularly drive up that way and there is no way on earth I would get a road bike out.

Constant ‘1000 People have died on this road in 2016’ signs everywhere.

I always think ‘that is a whole secondary school ‘

I would not like to bring my children up there.

Never road ride in that area, drive somewhere else

701arvn - which cycle route is it? Does it follow the a46?

I'm looking at Witham St Hughs at the moment. Seen an ace 2-bed

Yes, it is a dual use path next to the A46 down to the roundabout, then it is cycle lane mixed between the road and pavement into Hykeham all the way down branching off onto Tritton Road by the Forum.

It's about 5 k to the roundabout where you turn off into North Hykeham - where the Bentley Hotel and the Garden Center are.

You can ride a combination of on road cycle lane and dual use path down the A46, through Hykeham, down Tritton Road to the Brayford (University, shops, cinemas, restaurants etc). If you carry on out towards Saxilby (about 25k in total) there are plenty of paths around there to explore.

We are pretty well served for bike paths, just no mountain biking as such.

I'm from Lincoln, well Wragby near Horncastle.  It's flippin mint for road riding, loads of nice quiet rolling roads.  MTB is a bit limited though, as mentioned I think Sherwood is about your best bet.

701arvn - brilliant! I checked google maps and there is a path alongside. Witham is looking promising.

Noted about the road riding. I suppose i'll be selling my liteville and getting something less bouncy in a month or so!

Emm, those numbers can't be right.  Theres less than 1800 road deaths p.a. in the UK as a whole so a single road with over half that would be, not just roadworthy, but an easy was of improving the stats.  Even if it was killed or seriously injured that would be 3 people every day.  Presumably even if the number is something "scary" they aren't necessarily cyclists.

Theres a sign just after riseholme roundabout on the way to the show ground - has last years death total and this years, think its currently 23 for the year in the county - not quite 1800

I reckon all the Lincoln riders should get together and organise an urban downhill race through town like those South American races (but shorter).

Start from the  Stone bow race down the hill finish of down the glory hole onto the Brayford.  Build some obstacles and maybe we could use the spice junkies as moving chicanes.

Used to travel to Lincolnshire Wainfleet St Mary in between Boston and Skegness. The road riding around the Wolds is excellent. You are lucky to meet any traffic some days. The road accidents tend to be cars going off the road into the large drains either side of the road.

Don’t get ill in Lincs though it has the most dire regional health authority I’ve ever experienced.

Maybe the road is on the way to a hospital and it includes people dying en route
