Who has moved recently?
just looking for a rough guide of how much it costs to get some men in to do it. No suggestions of hiring flat bed trucks or anything please. Just how much for a big lorry to turn up with some strong men who know what they're doing and cart all our stuff from one house to another, probably no more than 5 miles apart.

thanks.

£500 to £1K+ depending on lead time and who is doing the packing

Go to BAR and get some quotes. Then prepare to faint.

Its costing me £2500 to move, all 4 quotes I got came in similar, but that is 250 miles, at a gues you'd still be looking at 1500 for the pros to do the full packing service, assuming 3 bed house.

I did consider both hiring a 7.5T and getting man with van, but I don't want to take any risks with such a big move.

Ours was £1800ish.
Prices ranged from £800 (worryingly low) to £2500.....

Eek!

small Hi-jack, if I may.

What about if you are moving literally down the road, like I may be.

time is mostly for load/unload with any move of less than 20 miles so local stuff doesn't really cost less if it's closer - it's still a few blokes and a van for the day they just get more time for lunch.

Moved house once and 'paid' friends in beer and curry to help me (hiring a van for the day).

If I do it again I will pay someone to do the whole lot, irrespective of cost.

great, thanks. We're moving from a small 3 bed to a bigger 4 bed. I think at the moment we don't have enough furniture to fill the new house but i'm sure my wife will see to that as quickly as she can, I'll estaimte up to £1500 to be on the safe side. All our stuff is crap anyway. I'd be a lot happier if the lorry crashed and burst into flames on the way to the new house.

Monetary or mental/physical costs?

And top-tip: let the moving men do everything. Just get out of the way. That's what you're paying them for.

Second top-tip, related to the first: if you don't let them do everything, and are handed a bag with passports etc. by the wife, your responsibility: don't lose the bag. You'll never hear the end of it 🙄

I moved 1.5 miles.

It cost me £650 for a company to come and pack everything including dismantling stuff, take it into storage overnight and then move it all in next day.

Also paid for the family to stay in a hotel for the night where we were between houses.

All in it was about £800 and the best £800 i have ever spent.

Also depends on where you are, and how flexible you can be.

Before you get someone around for a quote, clear out all your crap and tidy up. Also check whether your home contents insurance covers your things during the move, ours did and so saved a couple of hundred.

That sounds bloody cheap.

We've recently moved for £800 - costs are for a one bedroom ground floor flat (bedroom, living room and dining room) in Aberdeen with 2 weeks storage. Places were about 4 miles apart.

I read a rough estimate of £50/hour for two men and a van - this works out for us, more of less.

It's cheaper if you avoid the weekend period too - if you've got the flexibility to do it midweek it'll be worth it.

Indeed.
Or, as we did, let them pack up on a Friday, then you've the weekend to sort out your new place, and then they deliver on a Monday...
They didn't charge any extra for this, and the vehicle was kept in their lock-up over the weekend.
If I'd wanted it delivered on the Saturday, it would have been another £400 or something daft...

I think we got removers to do both moves - in the last 18 years. Easier to be honest; they packed (took ages) and they carted the stuff. They count by rooms, weren't counting on how much stuff we could cram into x rooms. We went back to the same removers the second time, they were good. Can't recall cost though; high 00s.

Second move was complex - moved out of our sold house, half stuff in storage, moved to rented house until we bought and got entry on a new house, then they scooped up all the stored stuff (in Edinburgh) *and* the stuff in the rented house (Elgin) and moved that to new house (Elgin again). Got to know the removal guys very well; very efficient and personable..

ask around though for recommends (or not recommends - there are some horror stories...)
