I'm moving shortly, my phone and broadband are with BT and should be working within a few hours of moving in, and I'm keeping my number.

The new place already has a Sky dish installed, I have the option of self-install, or free engineer visit. The advantage of an engineer visit is they will fix any faults with the current dish etc and warranty it for 90 days, the disadvantage is I'll have to hang about for them when I could be doing more interesting stuff.

So, seeing as the phone number is the same, when I move and plug in my box, I assume it won't know any different and I'll get my normal package and Sky+ function. If there is a problem I then know to go for an engineer visit.

Phone doesn't make any difference - Sky+ works by account and viewing card. So all will work fine. Don't need an engineer unless, as you say, something needs fixing with the dish or you need the cabling changed.

(I moved into a place with no phone line and my Sky all worked the same)

If it all looks in pretty good nick and the cables are running to where you want your Sky box then its a good chance that once connected up everything will be fine.

If the dish/cable looks a bit old or knackered its probably worth having the engineer visit.

Be aware that the difference between having a great signal and a poor one can be all of 5mm alignment which is not really visible from the ground.
With the engineer visit too if your old box is playing up/bit knackered/or a Thomson HD then the engineer can change it as part of the visit at no extra cost(will be a refurbished box though).
