You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Unbelievable.
Only 1 person got even part of the answer right.
Withnail + I id undoubtedly the right answer. Well done Woobob.
But even then 2 other vital watches were missed.
- Fandango (with a young draft-dodging Kevin Costner).
- Honeymoon in Vegas. Because who can possibly not want to watch a whole flock of Elvises doing a night skydive into Ballys ?
Talking of the 70's and reminded by the Miami Vice thread...
A Boy and His Dog
A bit controversial as it has understandably been labelled as more than a little misogynistic. That said, it's interesting to see Don Johnson at such a young age and it's got a kind of surreal Mad Max feel to it. It's an odd one but at least worth watching once in your life of you can find it.
The Shawshank Redemption <br />I have always wondered why this is so popular
It's more a story of friendship between Andy and Red, than a film about being in prison. That's my take on it, anyway.
I love Master and Commander, can't believe they never made another.
Inception, if we're doing one Nolan movie.
Heat, if only for the diner scene and the audio on the gun battle
Godfather
Children of Men - absolute perfection in terms of direction and cinematography.
Oh, and Dodgeball, obvs.
And Airplane, and Blazing Saddles...

I suppose I deserved that. 😁
Has anyone mentioned 'Seven years in Tibet', yet?
One of my all time favorite films, it's full of cliché but it's a really strong film. A top 10 for sure.

Not seen that in years, based on a true story from memory?

Kind of, some mountaineers who are having thier own drama get caught up in WW2 and become POW's.

Are we still all legally required to own Roam on DVD?
Hot Tub Time Machine. Dreadful premise, brilliant film. The film BTTF should have been.
So many already mentioned.
Gremlins
City of God - which reminds me that I need to give it another watch
This is England
Platoon
Scarface
I love Master and Commander, can’t believe they never made another.
Despite the love for it here, it didn't do so well on release and the squeals (they were planned) were canx. When it was released in the early noughties it was up against the LOTR trilogy and the very start of things like the X-Men. I did hear there was news of a squeal, but that was 2 years ago, and I've not heard 'owt else for a while.

Interestingly Shawshank is always high up on list like "10 films that every Christian should see" as they think (with good reason) its a fable about Christ. But I guess it's brain-off entertainment.
Nearly forgot
Cool Hand Luke
Brilliant

Cracking film watched it again a couple of years back.
Usual Suspects
Se7en
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - watched it again yesterday, it get better each time the story telling in superb, the cinematography, acting and how the era is caught.
"Human Traffic.
For those of a certain age, it was a documentary of any given weekend"
This is true.
I often feel the same when I watch Jackass
The Gods must be crazy.
The life aquatic.
Being John Malkovich.
Duel.
Wake in fright.
I watched The Big Lebowski loads of times but can never remember it. I think it was because I was stoned.
Lol @ Seven Years in Tibet
That film has become a slang term in our house for any actor who has a hilariously bad accent in a film
"I allvayys vonted to go to da himalaya"
Good film though.
As for A Boy and His Dog - I dimly remember that, didn't it have a sickly amusing ending?
City of God wow what a film - I remember seeing it for the first time and at the end just sitting in stunned silence for ages with a what just happened look on my face
Intresting stuff here.
I would add "Wings of Desire" and "Get Carter" (the original, obvs).
Things that impressed me at the time but didn't more recently include "Performance" and "Blow Up" (there may have been a re-make of the latter).
Oh, and now I think of it, haven't noticed any Greenaway, Jarman or Loach. Shurely some mistake. So try "Jubilee" featuring not only the wonderful Ian Charleson but also Toyah and Adam Ant, "The Draughtman's Contract" and "I Daniel Blake"
I’ve heard and read about most canon damage to the crews being through the shards of wood flying around
Apparently the RN tradition of first come/first served was the standard practise for seeing the surgeon in battles. Didn't matter if it was the captain who was injured, he joined the line and waited his turn like everyone else.
It was suspended once for Lord Nelson, but far as I'm aware, that was the only time.
@sharkattck. Does come across a bit like that, but for all we know he may be talking about "adult" books Vs "adult" film
Beverly Hills Cop
And most of the original Disney films. My 2 favourites will always be 101 Dalmatians and Robin Hood. It was a dad and young son thing.
I will confess... I've never seen The Big Lebowski much to my shame. I shall don sackcloth and ashes for the ridiculement.
Highlander.
There Can Only Be One!
As for A Boy and His Dog – I dimly remember that, didn’t it have a sickly amusing ending?
Yep, the dog was dying of starvation and well...
Ah, I'll also add this, Go!
Drugs, a hit and run, tantric sex and a pyramid scheme. A bit dark but very funny.
"Is your British ass happy!?"
I will confess… I’ve never seen The Big Lebowski much to my shame. I shall don sackcloth and ashes for the ridiculement.
I'll admit, it's how I've told my son I want to be sent off, cheaply and into the wind. You'll understand.😉
Contentious maybe but: Human Traffic
We watched it in the video tent at Homelands, absolutely packed full of ravers singing along and passing joints, weed/hash, pills, coke, and acid around - utterly brilliant atmosphere.
Never got away with Human Traffic. Probably because I spent the 90’s on the receiving end.

I imagine alcohol was a greater issue that blighted the emergency services
I don't think many people really survived the Human Traffic lifestyle unscathed. I definitely have a few issues I can trace back to an exuberant youth in the 90s.
But, the film is a connection back there. The good and the bad, all of it. Just talking about the film is enough to spark memories and, like I said, if you know you know.
I've got 73 quid in my back burner - I'm gonna wax the lot, man! The Milky Bars are on me! Yeah!
I imagine alcohol was a greater issue that blighted the emergency services
Yup, a lot more casualties from alcohol but then again more people use it Including myself. With alcohol you tent to know what you’re getting though, illicit drugs not so much.

True. An American friend bought a Black Jack wrapped in cling film for Twenty quid outside Camden Town underground station. To be fair it was one of the big ones and he’d never seen hashish before.
The Last Seduction
The Sure Thing
Highlander.
There Can Only Be One!
err.. There can be only one.
How about Saving private Ryan, not necessarily for the whole film, but the Normandy beach scene has got to be one of the most emotionally powerful pieces of film ever made, if you are not disgusted by war after that you are not human. And given the weekend it is, everybody should watch it today.
Why no love for the Godfather (pt1 & 2)?
Blazing saddles, Young frankenstein, Airplane, all Monty Python Films, Blade Runner, Cabaret, Vanishing Point, All Quiet on the Western Front, Aces High, Apocalypse Now, Dark Star, The last Waltz, The Offence, The man who would be King ...... better stop now!
How about Saving private Ryan
Genuinely sweating watching the first few minutes of that film. Had to stop. Watch a bit more. Stop again. And repeat. Terrifying, and that was 'make believe'.
The Andromeda Strain
Blue Juice
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Dr. Strangelove
Gravity
The Hunt for Red October
La Haine
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Wayne's World (1&2)
...but mainly, Firefox.
I love Master and Commander! Such an overlooked film! So gutted it didn't do well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel
Disappointed by the lack of Samurai Cop
I'll no doubt get flamed/rinsed/ridiculed etc but:
Black Rain
Big Trouble in Little China
Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away
Monsters Inc
Empire Records
The Dark Knight
I don't think I've seen Pulp Fiction mentioned?!
I'm wondering if a lot of people have watched anything on their list recently. I made that mistake. Hence Mall Rats and Dogma being absent from mine.
Papillon (1973 version ofc).
Marathon Man.
Very old and slightly left field...
The postman always rings twice (1946)
Also
1984 (1984)
1984... Superb but I can't watch it these days, too bleak and a little to close to home...
ll no doubt get flamed/rinsed/ridiculed etc but:
Black Rain
Big Trouble in Little China
I watched Big Trouble in Little China last week on Freevee. It's still good. Even the wife enjoyed it and she's never seen it before so no chance of nostalgia contamination.
Weird Science on the other hand, has not aged well.
Just seen this on page one: "Where the Crawdads Sing" gotta laugh if someone thinks that soppy bollox is essential viewing!
In case they haven't been mentioned - Miami Blues and Near Dark.
I'd rather watch that 'soppy bollox' than any number of franchise movies that are made just to part the credulous and their money. I can think of dozens of crap from things like Star Wars, the Marvel universe...where you could maybe assemble a half hour of decent movie from all the parts combined
I’d rather watch that ‘soppy bollox’ than any number of franchise movies
Well, I'd rather watch a decent film than any of what you mention! I'm pretty sure I didn't compare it to any franchise movie, just how it fits with the thread's theme... 😀
Can't believe we've gotten to page four with no mention of one of the most quotable films ever made - Anchorman.
Well, I’d rather watch a decent film than any of what you mention!
I haven't mentioned any films.
CountZero
Nobody’s mentioned 2001 – A Space Odyssey. I went to the cinema and saw it on its first release. Pretty mind-blowing to a 15yo.
It's an outstanding example of the art of filmmaking, but to me the most mind blowing part of 2001 is that it makes 2 and half hours seem like several years. My god it's a tough watch.
Because no-one else has said it
The Lives of Others
and in support of recent films:
1917
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Blackkklansman
Everything by the Coen bros, particularly Inside Llweyn Davis. And perhaps also Eden, though that may just be a film I enjoyed. Here's da funk
Off the boathouse all you STWers that have not seen Ronin.
Team America: World Police
Off the boathouse all you STWers that have not seen Ronin.
Could you describe it to me please so I can find it? What colour is the boathouse?
Thanks
Some great films mentioned and I'll add;
Blue is the Warmest Colour
All Tarantino films, IMO he is a genius.
L'appartement with Monica Belluci.
Unsurprisingly this is very subjective - to me many of the films could constitute a list of "tedious bollocks nobody should waste any time on".
Because it'd be unsporting of me not to offer a choice for ridicule I commend to you "The Station Agent". It's great.
wes anderson films, especially rushmore.
taxi driver doesn’t seem to have been mentioned.
