Unbelievable.

Only 1 person got even part of the answer right.

Withnail + I id undoubtedly the right answer. Well done Woobob.

But even then 2 other vital watches were missed.

- Fandango (with a young draft-dodging Kevin Costner).

- Honeymoon in Vegas. Because who can possibly not want to watch a whole flock of Elvises doing a night skydive into Ballys ?

Talking of the 70's and reminded by the Miami Vice thread...

A Boy and His Dog

A bit controversial as it has understandably been labelled as more than a little misogynistic. That said, it's interesting to see Don Johnson at such a young age and it's got a kind of surreal Mad Max feel to it. It's an odd one but at least worth watching once in your life of you can find it.

The Shawshank Redemption <br />I have always wondered why this is so popular

It's more a story of friendship between Andy and Red, than a film about being in prison. That's my take on it, anyway.

I love Master and Commander, can't believe they never made another.

Inception, if we're doing one Nolan movie.
Heat, if only for the diner scene and the audio on the gun battle
Godfather
Children of Men - absolute perfection in terms of direction and cinematography.

Oh, and Dodgeball, obvs.

And Airplane, and Blazing Saddles...

Has anyone mentioned 'Seven years in Tibet', yet?

One of my all time favorite films, it's full of cliché but it's a really strong film. A top 10 for sure.

I love Master and Commander, can’t believe they never made another.

Despite the love for it here, it didn't do so well on release and the squeals (they were planned) were canx. When it was released in the early noughties it was up against the LOTR trilogy and the very start of things like the X-Men. I did hear there was news of a squeal, but that was 2 years ago, and I've not heard 'owt else for a while.

It’s more a story of friendship between Andy and Red, than a film about being in prison

Interestingly Shawshank is always high up on list like "10 films that every Christian should see" as they think (with good reason) its a fable about Christ. But I guess it's brain-off entertainment.

Contentious maybe but: Human Traffic.

Lol @ Seven Years in Tibet

That film has become a slang term in our house for any actor who has a hilariously bad accent in a film

"I allvayys vonted to go to da himalaya"

Good film though.

As for A Boy and His Dog - I dimly remember that, didn't it have a sickly amusing ending?

City of God  wow what a film - I remember seeing it for the first time and at the end just sitting in stunned silence for ages with a what just happened look on my face

Intresting stuff here.

I would add "Wings of Desire" and "Get Carter" (the original, obvs).

Things that impressed me at the time but didn't more recently include "Performance" and "Blow Up" (there may have been a re-make of the latter).

Oh, and now I think of it, haven't noticed any Greenaway, Jarman or Loach. Shurely some mistake. So try "Jubilee" featuring not only the wonderful Ian Charleson but also Toyah and Adam Ant, "The Draughtman's Contract" and "I Daniel Blake"

I’ve heard and read about most canon damage to the crews being through the shards of wood flying around

Apparently the RN tradition of first come/first served was the standard practise for seeing the surgeon in battles. Didn't matter if it was the captain who was injured, he joined the line and waited his turn like everyone else.

It was suspended once for Lord Nelson, but far as I'm aware, that was the only time.

Yep, the dog was dying of starvation and well...

Ah, I'll also add this, Go!

Drugs, a hit and run, tantric sex and a pyramid scheme. A bit dark but very funny.

I don't think many people really survived the Human Traffic lifestyle unscathed. I definitely have a few issues I can trace back to an exuberant youth in the 90s.

But, the film is a connection back there. The good and the bad, all of it. Just talking about the film is enough to spark memories and, like I said,  if you know you know.

I've got 73 quid in my back burner - I'm gonna wax the lot, man! The Milky Bars are on me! Yeah!

True. An American friend bought a Black Jack wrapped in cling film for Twenty quid outside Camden Town underground station. To be fair it was one of the big ones and he’d never seen hashish before.

How about Saving private Ryan, not necessarily for the whole film, but the Normandy beach scene has got to be one of the most emotionally powerful pieces of film ever made, if you are not disgusted by war after that you are not human. And given the weekend it is, everybody should watch it today.

I watched Big Trouble in Little China last week on Freevee. It's still good. Even the wife enjoyed it and she's never seen it before so no chance of nostalgia contamination.

I'd rather watch that 'soppy bollox' than any number of franchise movies that are made just to part the credulous and their money. I can think of dozens of crap from things like Star Wars, the Marvel universe...where you could maybe assemble a half hour of decent movie from all the parts combined

Nobody’s mentioned 2001 – A Space Odyssey. I went to the cinema and saw it on its first release. Pretty mind-blowing to a 15yo.

It's an outstanding example of the art of filmmaking, but to me the most mind blowing part of 2001 is that it makes 2 and half hours seem like several years. My god it's a tough watch.

Unsurprisingly this is very subjective - to me many of the films could constitute a list of "tedious bollocks nobody should waste any time on".

Because it'd be unsporting of me not to offer a choice for ridicule I commend to you "The Station Agent". It's great.
