Move 2FA to a new device

I'm currently using the Okta Verify app for 2FA for a number of services, I'm due to get a new phone soon and have no idea how the 2FA will "move" from the old device to the new one.

Is there something I need to do in advance, or should it auto-magically happen?

Anyone been through this and got any advice/tips/etc?

I'd have thought it unlikely to "just happen" or it'd kinda defeat the point of having MFA in the first place.

Many apps have a backup or export function, or a way of generating recovery codes. With that app specifically I've no idea, but that's what I'd be looking for. Worst case scenario, disable MFA on your accounts before migrating and then re-establish it using the new device.

Also, consider what would happen if you'd lost your device rather than were merely upgrading.

Whilst back since I did it with my work okta but it was along the lines of having both phones available and then logging into okta and following a few steps to transfer it across.
If you go to their website it gives guidance on how to do it.

Probably best to enable alternate authentication as well eg sms message whilst its happening.

My experience is that it was quicker to turn off MFA on the old device and then re-enable it on the new one.

A quick look on their documentation suggests that a FIDO key (Yubikey or similar) would be useful for moving devices (effectively installing on multiple devices before deleting from the old one). Have a rootle around on their support and forum sites and see if anyone else has done it successfully before. What do your work IT suggest? (Or are you work everything?)

Thanks, it was as simple as logging into the individual accounts, turning off 2FA, then turning it on again and scanning the QR code with the new device.

Also, consider what would happen if you’d lost your device rather than were merely upgrading.

I have the downloaded keys for each of the sites which I'm hoping/assuming will work in this situation
