Just received my new Canyon mountain bike. Need to put it together and never done one before. They forgot to put in the assembly paste and the fork pressure pump! Annoying but can buy the latter. is the assembly paste essential?

Don’t recall any assembly paste in my canyon hard tail so I reckon you’ll be ok. Where are you supposed to apply this paste?

Assembly paste is a nice-to-have for carbon but something you can always add later, don't worry about it for now. Just don't overtighten stuff to compensate.

Shock pump is obviously essential though... I'd be getting onto Canyon, that's £20-£25 worth of stuff there.

Whereabouts are you? Someone'll have a pump you can borrow, if you're Edinburgh-ish drop me a line, we can do a socially distant assembly...

Assuming you mean carbon assembly paste? It helps, not essential and you'll not damage anything by not riding without and apply at a later date - just ensure you use a torque wrench at the right setting.

Thanks for all your help. Will go ahead without the paste. I’m in Kent so a fair distance from Edinburgh but thank you! Is it hard to put on the back wheel? Don’t want to screw it up.

It is really really not. Well, you might get the chain on the wrong side of the cassette, everyone does that sometimes, but that's OK.

Northwind is right about rear wheel, just don't ask him how to put your forks on 😜 (old joke) Getting the axle past the mech and chain can be fiddly but don't force it, be patient. steady away on the bolts, not too tight.

Is it a Sram rear mech? Don't you have pull out a little lever or something when removing/installing the rear wheel?

I've only ever had Shimano, but remember something like from working on my mates bike...

Yep.

Spring button, holds the bottom cage back. (Keeps the chain slack)

That's actually the best thing about sram derailleurs, some may say the only thing.
You'll be fine. There's just no need to tighten things up too much, just remember you'll need to undo them sometime.
