...are you just having fun with all those notices saying 40mph for 30 miles when there is no rhyme or reason. M25 and M6 plagued with them. Then the lovely roadworks N of the M6 toll road. Anything actually going on there?

6 hours from Brum to Lakes on Friday with signs everywhere but no evidence of any reasons. Just drove back from Scotland today and several sections of M6 (on the N bound side) that despite no obvious reason coming from the N, turned into 10 mile tail backs???

What is going on?

INAMGO but...

When you get a jam/delay caused by some incident it sets up a ripple of compressed traffic that moves away from the original problem and survives long after it has been sorted and cleared.

It behaves a bit like a compression wave in a slinky. Rippling along with nothing obvious causing it.

So one way to shorten the lifetime of that ripple is to dampen the spring by getting people to slow down a bit before it gets to them. This has the added benefit of reducing the chances of someone ploughing into the slowed traffic at speed.

It's a good theory but in practise people seem to happily ignore the gantries because there is no obvious hazard so I'm not sure it works that well.

Another thing that driverless cars will do better for us.
