You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Elsewhere I've been pontificating between a GPS or a phone for navigating.
I couldn't get my Mac to load the Garmin friendly OS map alikes so sticking with what I know.
Tried an iPhone 6s yesterday which worked well but screen didn't work with gloves.
So can anyone confirm the screen works with summer gloves ?
Phone is £99 in Argos.
Yes - mine does.
Note: no compass.
Screen has to be turned to max brightness outside (if wearing sunglasses etc) which impacts battery life - still good
That's good .
Can you have it so that it stays unlocked?
Obviously a fingerprint scanner on the back on a mount isn't very useful
You can set screen timeout to 30 mins and as above it works with gloves.
I paid £160 for mine so £99 is a bargain. It's not the fastest in terms of performance but it does the job and the battery seemingly lasts forever compared to my old Pixel 4XL (which I dropped in the bath hence the Moto!).
It's just going to be used for bike duties so it doesn't need to be too fancy. It's the power lite in Argos but the proper one in John Lewis is £110
The battery just needs to last for a 4 hour ride
One thing that may be worth considering is that they are not advertised as waterproof, and the screens seem to be be very fragile and prone to cracking from being dropped. More so than any other phone I've ever had.
Had a G8 Power for nearly a year now though, and I'm happy enough with it, and although there are a few cracks it is still useable. For £99 I'd probably replace with another one if this does properly break.
I had one, only stopped using it as we felt my daughter was old enough to need a phone, and rather than give her a new one thought I'd cry less when she loses/breaks my old Moto.
I used it to run Komoot as my navigation, pretty much like a car sat nav on the bars in a Topeak drybag sort of thing, with a hard mount. The touchscreen worked through the drybag, can unlock with the numerical/pattern code not just fingerprint. Worked fine like this for 6/7 hour rides in the pissing rain.
I usually had it running Bluetooth to a single ear bud for directions through urban areas, and the screen on all the time. Sometimes podcasts too. Would easily last a day from memory, though I did have a powerbank just in case. 100 mile on road was the longest I used it, didn't run out.
I think it'd work for your use - I've got a Garmin Explore now (short version of a long story - need my phone for a blood sugar scanner so separating nav and phone) but was happy with it.
Mine lasted 9 months before the charging port went.
My Garmin was more expensive but still does a day riding after 5 years. Maps are a faff but it just works (after the faff of putting the right maps and routes on).
Mine lasted 9 months before the charging port went
My work G7 power did that, new port was a tenner. We use the Moto g pro now with the pointless stylus.
Or at least did until the blue tooth started acting up. Two have gone back so far and others are starting to get generally glitchy.
I guess you get what you pay for.
