After my Sony xperia z1 is headed back to o2 for repair for a second time I am looking at other android options that are water resistant.

I've come across the motorola moto g. Android 4.4.2, quad core, nano coated for water resistance and £150 to buy!

What can possibly go wrong?

yip, cracking phone, the water proofing works too, I left mine outside the tent all night, picked it up in a dewy morning in april and it still worked fine 🙂 I wouldn't like to test that much further mind!

Nothing. It's been great for me, though the 8gb fills up pretty quick. Battery does a couple of days with normal use. Didn't know it was nano coated.. interesting as the only reason I've got one is my wee'an sucked it and the volume keys stopped working. It was my OH's phone at the time so she donated it to me and it dried out after a week or so.

Very happy so far with my "original version" 3G 8Gb version. Note that there are a couple of new variants imminent - a 4G version which also has a memory card slot, and a lower spec 3G one.

Yep, love my 16GB version that I'm typing this on now. Only had it for about 3 months but had no issues with it at all.

Got mine from Phones4u for £144

Which reminds me, my mate won one last week and wanted to know if my lad wanted it. I think "he" might 😉

If it's anything like my Motorola Razri I wouldn't bother. It worked for just less than 12 months and stopped working, wouldn't go past the start up screen. Went away for repair, came back working fine then had the same problem 2 months later.
This time Orange wanted me to pay for repair as "Motorola phones only come with 12 months warranty"!!!
WTF phone is on a 24 month contract.....

After a few phone calls I managed to get a new phone out of Orange free of charge..... only to discover last night that they've charged me £170 on my latest bill for the replacement phone!! I've phoned them and they've promised to refund me next week.
Sorry for the rant, I'm a bit pissed off with Orange and Motorola today 👿

If you search back through the forum, it seems to be STW weapon of choice on every other "what phone" thread.

Actually, that reminds me,

With regards to the water resistant bit, how does the screen work if it's wet (or your hands are)? Does it work, or does it go daft like every other touchscreen device I own?

Ju just got one, a cheapo 8g from Virgin for £109.

Its certainly better than my last phone, a Sony Arc Experia S which was twice the price, albeit 18m ago, with the exception of the camera.

Using one for 4 months and very happy. Also got 2 Motorola Defy Minis that seem to work very well despite one being my work phone and one getting hammered by my teenager.

If it's anything like my Motorola Razri I wouldn't bother.

I think all phones are a risk. I had 3 htc with no issues and then had one fail in much the same way you describe with the same lack of support from Orange as in the tail end of contract. That is why I don't have phones that cost a fortune in monthly payments and why I went Moto G this time. I got a deal which only cost me 2ukp per month more than SIM only and if something does happen I can afford to replace it without a second mortgage.

The camera is dreadful. I'll be getting rid of mine and the one I got for Dad, for that reason only.

Otherwise a very good phone.

The camera is OK unless you enlarge the images and it is not OK for prints.

All those snaps I sent you were taken with this one, Rich.

..and they were shit. 😉

It needs lots of light to take a half decent picture, quality falls off the scale quite dramatically in anything other than that.

camera is pretty poor. Its fine if you are just view on screen and just pointing and clicking. But for print and anything else its poor.

I only ever view images online and rarely off the phone so fine for me.

can't say I've particularly noticed. I think its just the internals that are coated. The screen will act the same as others. Though i've also dropped the phone loads of times, not a dent on the screen as yet. Its pretty tough glass they use.

Asus make the Nexus 7. After bad experiences with a Nexus 7 I'd never buy any of their products again.

Anyone have any opinions/experience of the new Moto E? According to glowing reviews it's a game changer in the world of budget smart phones. A step down from the Moto G, but given it's a fraction of the cost, I was thinking of getting one.

Got my wife a Moto G, you can also get Motorola flip case for it that replaces the back panel of the phone. Makes for a very slim tidy case, it literally just adds a front flap.

Ay up, I'm thinking of getting this phone but the asda website says it's CDMA. No I didn't know what it meant either, but I think all UK networks are GSM and need a SIM card. Does anyone know if the ASDA Moto G works in the UK with Sim cards?
Apologies for the techno-geek question.

Top budget phone, fast, big screen, GPS seems accurate too. camera is pretty good for day time but yeah low light can be iffy (but I'm not that arsed about photography) only downside is work got me the base 8Gb model, 16 would be better, card slot even betterer.

Just signed up to a contract with a Moto-G last night....Tesco mobile (O2 in disguise) are doing some exceptional deals: £12.50/month with free phone (16GB), 500 mins, 5,000 txts and 500 MB of data. I was paying £11/month on sim only with 100, 100 and 100 with O2 so an extra £1.50 for a brand new phone + more minutes, data etc.....it's a 2 year contract (sucks) but given I'm only paying £1.50 extra I don't think it's a massive risk if the phone dies outside of warranty or anything. Pure android is nice too for those of us who like to be able to delete the bundled apps (facebook). Oli.

I'm thinking of getting this phone but the asda website says it's CDMA

Got a link for that? CMDA has never been used in the UK and I'll be absolutely stunned if ASDA are selling one. It's either a misprint or you're on a non-UK site.

Regarding the cdma thing, the specs on the asda website say it's:

Technology
CDMA2000 1X / GSM / WCDMA (UMTS)
Band
WCDMA (UMTS) / GSM 850/900/1800/1900 / CDMA2000 1X 1900/850

So, looks it handles gsm too, which i think is what UK networks are on...

256ppi (vs 326 for Mo to G) is "very low res"?

For £79?

Another vote for that TESCO deal - £12.50/month and free phone.
My wife has one and I think it's great.

And another question ...

ninfan - is the Trident Aegis robust enough for taking off road or should I cover the screen with bubblewrap?

mine came with a thin stick on screen protector, prevent scratches etc, but the 'bezel' around the screen seems to protect it really well from normal dropping

Camera no longer an issue, I've just dropped mine and turned into a mosaic of glass splinters.

Quick google suggests glass replacement is a ball ache and it's getting a bit laggy/weird anyhow.

Any reccomendations for similar budget jobbies currently doing the rounds?

As this thread has been resurrected, anyone got experience of the new MotoG 4G? I'm considering it as a replacement for my aging Galaxy Nexus, but the 1GB of RAM, which is what I have already, is putting me off.

Mrs Pondo has just had a Moto G 4G and loves it, although that carries the caveat that neither of us know rock-all about phones - it's just a milion times quicker than her old Galaxy Fame and does everything she needs. Moto G 4G has a memory card slot, Moto G doesn't, I think.

Just got a Gen 2 Moto G 4G direct from Motorola. Not the fastest phone in the world but does for what I require. 8GB memory is a bit small but just added a 32GB SD card so plenty of room for the music.

Only had it a week but first impressions are good for the price.

miketually:
I was waiting for the 2nd gen 4G to be released but then got so distracted by the Archos 50 Diamond that I ordered one.
It's £10 more and has a much, much better spec inc 2GB RAM. Runs almost stock last version of Android too

GSMarena website is great for comparing phone specs

I've just swapped my original 16gb Moto G for a Z3 Compact. The Z3 is lightning fast compared to the Moto, but it should be at around twice the price. The Moto G was a good buy and was never glitchy and seemed pretty well made. I'd have no qualms recommending one.

What I would say is don't buy an 8GB version unless it has an SD card slot.

The flip side of them being such good value new (and so popular) is that they're worth virtually nothing on Mazuma etc. if you want to trade them in. I'm considering just leaving mine in the car with a PAYG SIM as an emergency phone (unless anyone here wants to buy it? 😉 )

Moto E seems a screaming bargain, no?

Yes, its a decent phone for the price. Compared to the Moto G, it is a pretty low-res screen. And not much memory, but you can add a MicroSD card.
The camera is rather poor (worse than the Moto G). And no LED flash, which is annoying if you want to use it as a torch. And no compass if you care about that.
Still, a bargain for a basic Android phone.

Has anyone found a good (preferably free) replacement camera app? I find the colours are very washed out especially if you use the click to focus setting as it sets the exposure (badly) on where you click also.

The screen works well in the rain - water beads up on it like a raincoat, was a pleasant surprise for me

I found a full review yesterday (in French) but it says it's the best mid-range phone out there but with some very minor issues
