Can anyone recommend somewhere to hire a Motorhome in Northern England please?  We're looking at doing a mini tour of South East Scotland for a week / ten days in September.

If anyone has done something similar, I'm also looking for recommendations and tips for places to stay/see/ride/eat etc

Plus, will it be a midge-fest??

Where in 'northern England'? It's a pretty large area.

Ahh, can't really help you then. If you were in the Harrogate area I could tell you who to avoid.

I can't help on the motorhome front but can definitely say you should visit The Tweed Valley.
I'll even show you round our trails.
Just drop us a PM a couple of weeks before you're up.

10years ago we used Liberty Campers in Ilkley to hire a van for a long weekend. They were good too deal with. They're still going too. You can leave your car in their yard during the rental

Are you absolutely sure you want to campervan? You aren't talking a big area with equally spaced things to-do. Like a two base holiday would be another way for doing it. Unless ofcourse the aim is the campervan experience.

And what kind of things do you like doing?

Obvious ones include Tantallon, cove harbour, North Berwick, paddle boarding on st Mary's/loch of the lowes, grey mares tail + walk up to loch skene (for a superb reveal). Tweed valley for mountain bikes... Pretty much the whole of the borders for quiet road riding with some decent climbs. Skinny dipping in the linns of talla plus a night in games hope bothy.

Source: I live here.

OP really wants to be looking local to them – most (if not all) yards let you leave your car for the duration of your hire (at least I have never not been able to). If the dealer is local to the OP, they can collect the motorhome and drive it back home to pack it for the holiday – it's much easier that way.

Definitely still in the planning stage at the moment, but some very helpful replies so far - thanks!

A couple of things to help with the ideas..

I live in Suffolk and have a VW t5 that I would potentially load up, drive from ours to a rental place half way up the country to hire a van (and potentially save a few quid - not sure if it actually would?) so leaving my van in a yard would be helpful.  If the pricing isn't too different I'd just hire nearer to home.

Looking for the campervan experience (to see if we would actually like to buy in the future) and to explore some of Scotland - most of the trip would be for MTB riding (Mabie, Kirrochtree, Dalbeattie etc)

We are thinking of renting a MH/campervan but we have a doggo. Googling led us to Goboony which appears to be the Airbnb of the campervan world with private owners putting their vans up for rent. Haven't progressed it to an actual hire yet so cannot comment further.

Anywhere that rents rooftop tents?

Or just take a tent seeing as you already have a vehicle that can carry all your gear.

Decent tent from Decathlon, an inflatable mattress (take a decent duvet from home) kits some cooking gear will be cheaper than Campervan hire.

This is the best thing we ever did.
We hired one and then picked it apart from a 'i want more of...' and 'i don't like....'.
Unfortunately the modest budget and anything but a VW became....

I honestly think after having owned a pop top T5 the best option is a high top roof. I think if we had gone for a high top originally we wouldn't have sold the van and spent a year converting a new one.

Googling led us to Goboony

We found:

- many were home [s]bodged[/s] made...

- by the time fees and cleaning were included, we got a cheaper hire from a proper company

We used these folk, a lot further north than you are wanting

This lot are opposite my work. Just outside where you're looking but you can leave your van in our "yard".
