Any recommendations or companies to avoid?
It's for 4 of us for about 5 nights (2 adults 2 kids). Some seem to have longer minimum nights but most seem ok with 5 nights.
Anything we need to bear in mind?
Will it actually be awful?
Should I get additional insurance?

Probably thinking of going up north, but maybe not all the way to the top. But any route recommendations would be gratefully received.
Edinburgh is easiest for us as we'll drive up from London and leave our car with my parents.

If you want to go up north properly, then drive your own more economical car the extra miles to Aviemore or Inverness where there are hire companies.

You can often leave a car with the hire company, or either place has safe enough places to leave a car for a week.

Or get the train.

Then head out in the big bus.

Thanks, yeah maybe that is a good idea if there's nothing we want to see between Edinburgh and Inverness.

Yeah, but is there nothing you want to see between Edinburgh and Inverness? What about Glencoe, Lochaber, Perthshire, Cairngorms etc?

Since Edinburgh was further West than Liverpool or Bristol 🙂

(still freaks me out)

You know, looking at that map there is quite a lot between Edinburgh and Inverness!
I should point out that we're very early in planning this - my wife only mentioned it this morning so forgive my lack of research.

Anyone hired (orown) a motorhome and have any advice on things to look for/avoid?

I think a lot of people underestimate the size of Scotland, and that travel on twistier roads takes a lot of time.

I would heartily suggest choosing maybe two places and exploring them well, rather than a driving marathon between 5 places...

Highland Campervans, Inverness. Very handy esp if you can fly to Inverness. Collection from airport and remember to get you online shop delivered to them before you arrive.

I am just about to drive from Stirling to Inverness and beyond via Glencoe for the first time. I’ve previously gone straight via Perth to Inverness and considered north of there the holiday proper. Bear in mind you’re looking at 3 hours to get from Inverness to Durness (worth it IMO to go the distance to get there - that’s our ultimate destination). I think whether you do the bit via Glencoe might depend how much time you have and how travel sick your kids get. It’s ok to Inverness from Perth. North of Inverness or Ullapool it is not easy going for those who go green. I’d recommend keeping your mileage down and just enjoying the places you see - it’s pretty slow going on many roads and you don’t want to feel under pressure to get to somewhere miles away.

I believe that Nicola Sturgeon has one that she’s not doing much with at the moment. You could ask her for a loan.

I think the cairngorms is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been - though it did take a lot of walking to get to the beautiful bits. I’d go there if I was up that way.

A fairly standard route for short-term Scottish tourists who want to spend their time in a var/camper getting out to take pictures seems to be something like: Edinburgh > Stirling > Loch Lomond (W) > Crianlarich > Glencoe > Ft William > Loch Ness (N) > Inverness > Aviemore > St Andrews > Edinburgh.

(I'm not advocating that route but to a tourist not looking to go too far North, that's not as crazy as it seems to a local looking to get to Inverness by the shortest route).   If the OP is considering that as a possibility here's some things I think its missing: "for Culture" - Glasgow and Dundee - both do museums etc well.  "for views" - it largely ignores the west coast and Argyll which are probably nicer than the A9!  And if the OP has parents in Edinburgh whilst starting and finishing there makes sense it might be that "2" visits to the city he knows is not the best use of time (or it might be ideal family time).

In terms of hiring - there's quite a few reasonably sized operations around now and I've not heard any horror stories (except the price!).  Gas supplies can be an issue finding somewhere with the right bottle in stock - that may be improving now.  Of course the bigger the van the more comfortable - but the harder to park!
