OK, if anyone is interested, and thanks to those who've offered encouragement/advice, son and I completed a brilliant trip around some of Europe.  1 week after passing his bike test, we rode through bits of Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, France.  Camped 95% of the time, brilliant spots, lots of lakes and Alps/mountains.  Covered c.6000km, not one breakdown!

The point of the trip was to help my son out, and he reckoned that biking each day, the concentration required and lack of distractions has been a great help.  We talked a lot, and just enjoyed the time together.  Europe treated us brilliantly.  Probably the best thing I've done.  No, it is the best thing I've done, a real privilege.

My son has worked through stuff and he's just gone off to Uni to study economics, in a great frame of mind.  So chuffed for him.

So a big thanks for the encouragement.  Now I've just got to sort myself out!

I'd love to do something like this. Alas, it would be too dangerous, my son is only 2 and I'm riding on a CBT. He struggled with the Islabikes at the bike show.

On a less silly note, genuinely inspiring stuff, it's this sort of thing that appeals to me the most about motorbiking in general.

looks amazing. How long was the trip?

We did 6 weeks, had to cut it short by 2 week as the selfish boy wanted to go to Uni!!!  Couldve carried on happily for another month or 2 ... as would my son.

On roads like that it would be impossible not to be in a state of mental bliss, on motorbike or pushbike. So pleased to read about the trip; will you be writing it up?

None of this actually happened. It’s too difficult and completely out of the capabilities of a new rider, as has already been established in previous threads...

Thanks all ... genuinely touched by the support.  It was a brilliant experience (and I'll shut up about it soon!)

And Rachel, good old chuckle at your comment!  FWIW, amazing how quickly a novice becomes pretty good!  And from our trip, European roads were, without doubt, far better, safer than UK roads and Euro respect of 2 wheels much better.

Fantastic stuff, and here's me worrying about a European trip 18 months after my DAS, better just get on with it 👍

@allthegear Yes my advice of buy bike, ride bike until you run out of time or money was ridiculous. It would never work 🙂

Only problem with these sorts of threads is its coming into winter in Northern Europe so we have to wait for the Spring to plan new trips.

So I guess I will have to go to Almeria on the edge of the Sierra Nevada  to ride my bike around a race track for 5 days instead next week 😀
