Hi, possibly have a chance to do some motorcycling in Croatia.  Never been before, spent a few days next door in Slovenia a few years back.  The focus would be riding my bike, fun, twisty roads, enjoying the ride.  Not interested in visiting towns or cities.  Love being in the countryside, small villages.  It would camping, and eating at local eateries.

I really enjoy touring e.g. Italy as so many campsites that you never need to book ahead, plenty of petrol stations with cafes, easy to get food ... so you can wing it rather than too much planning.  What's Croatia like for this?

I'd be (possibly) leaving Calais end next week, so hoping the weather is still good - and any tips on a route to Croatia avoiding tolls/dull motorways?

Cheers

I can’t really help but at least you’ll get a bump. My son did a climbing trip to Croatia and said that rural airbnbs were so cheap they gave up camping. I’ve been twice and thought it was great. Do get ferries to islands. In Crostia ferries carry cars, catamarans only carry people

Hi

We've been to Croatia a few times, the last twice to a place called Starigrad which is just outside of the Paklenica national park. There were loads of motorcyclists in the area, about 90% German plates and the local restaurants had their menus is Croat, English and German. My other half suggested asking on the website Adventure Rider - Ride the World (advrider.com), there's a European section or ukgser.com for route help.

If you do end up in Starigrad, go to the Ante Restaurant - literally one of the best meals I have ever had

Crumbs the run across to Croatia from Calais, avoiding main roads would be an adventure in itself. Reckon on 200-250 miles a day before you get defeated by the sheer mental effort required. Have you thought about sticking the bike on the motorrail from Dusseldorf to Villach and then ride down from there?Urlaubs Express

other than that, the biggest issue will be heat. It’s been 30-35° in Northern Croatia over the last few weeks, higher in the south towards Split. We struggled in air conditioned luxury. I’ve ridden in heat like that before and resorted to shorts, MTB body armour, t-shirt and a full camelback which had to be refilled twice a day. I’ve got a grey touring jacket that is really well vented, but it just won’t do that kind of heat. It’s cooler now (25-30), just bear it mind.

Theres some fantastic roads, both on the way and when you’re there. It’s still relatively cheap away from the tourist areas, though adopting the euro made coffee expensive.

id probably have a look on MyRoute-app and see if anyone has published some routes

Is it still infested by absolute bellends? By some distance the most toxic forum I had the misfortune to stumble across a few years ago.

Thanks - good to hear about accommodation options and the National Park (def will try Ante if I end up there, looks idyllic!).

And the journey there is def part of the adventure, I'm reckoning a little under 1500miles so not too bad, and prob lots of fun along the way!

Was in South Croatia near Dubrovnik last week.

There's basically one road in that area, Adriatic coastal road, running from Greece to Slovenia.

The sea's on one side and the mountains rise on the other with the Bosnian border on top. Think the country is only about 600m wide there at its narrowest, 600m high too.

Beautiful area, but was very warm.

I can't provide any help here, but replying to let you know I am about to do the same!

Been booked for a while, getting the ferry over to Rotterdam this Thursday and like you the journey is a major draw. I'm going with a pal, we are basically avoiding the motorways and threading our way to south Croatia with no real plan other than finding camp sites along the way to sleep, we will stop for food when hungry.

Can't wait!

We return the 9th - if you happen to be over at the same time give us a shout!
