Why do some riders and passengers never wear a helmet, as the Arctic Monkeys once sang it must be ****ing freezing on the cheeks and the risk or the huge risk of a Freddy Flintoff if a car pull out in front of you

Various reasons down to personal choice I guess, much like riding a bicycle without a helmet it can be quite liberating not having to walk around with a helmet under your arm or carry a chain lock to lock your helmet to a bike.

There is also some weird helmet legality thing on trikes about vehicle weight & seatbelts, and besides Reliant 3 wheelers were hardly any safer with just a skin of fibreglass to protect the occupants.

I'm tolerant of most things but trikes are up there with singing drummers.
Trikes with car engines are even ****ing worse.
Sitting in the rain ,in a traffic jam with no roof ,what's the ****ing point?

I guess the point of them often is doing everything people enjoy about being a biker - wind in your hair, sun in your eyes, flies in your teeth- but with a disability.

Personal choice innit. Some people make dumb choices.

As a newbie motorbike rider, I wouldn't dare ride without a helmet. Not for fear of crashing but just because of the sheer amount of unidentifiable foreign objects that you hear bouncing off your helmet. I'd be missing an eye or scarred for life already.

TBH I did lust after a can-am Ryder but did seem a lot of money for something not reliable, economical or cheap and also not small to park.

I suppose being able to drive it on a driving licence is a driver of the market and the incorrectly perceived safety.

Don’t get the not wearing a helmet though on a trike or quad to protect against other road debris and tbh we know how well a bandana and Google’s are going to fair if it all goes Pete tong.

I suppose once you’ve slid down a road a few times at slow speeds you sort of have a different perspective on this 🙂

I think the two main reasons people buy them have been identified above. People who would like to ride a motorcycle but are unable to because a. they have a disability or b. they don't have a motorcycle licence.

As a motorcyclist they don't appeal personally, but I get why some people buy them. Each to their own.

Usually ridden by the same individuals that only need a leather waistcoat with some rear embroidery rather than a jacket like the rest of us!

To be fair, there's plenty of them on two wheels too. Proper cringe. If they are 'one percenters' or members of a patched MC, I'm not going to tell them not to! Any other wannabes trying to ape that look just deserve a good s****ing at.

Does a moped with the two wheels up front class as a trike? - as they're about the same level of cool!

Road bike trike conversions: used to ride a "proper" bike, got injured, still likes to get out with the Missus on Sundays.

Can-Am neo-trike: likes tracksuits, very loud and shitty music, and is, remarkably, too thick to ride a sports bike.

With the average age of this crowd, its more a case of the wind in whats left of your hair 😆

I know one guy who rides a trike. Leg injury means he struggles to ride a standard bike. No way would he go out without a helmet though he does know others that do. Mainly because they think it’s cool!

I’ve a got a quad for pulling stuff around in the fields etc. Happily tootle around with a bike helmet on doing that but if I head onto the road it’s full on full face Motorbike helmet and goggles. It’s great on the fields but quite scary on corners on the road.

Biker mate told me years ago, takes the worst aspects of biking and the worst aspects of car driving and it mixes them together, which seems to make sense to me.

i believe some do and some do not - it depends how far apart the wheels are!

At least 3 people I knew a while back had VW beetle conversions and that's not necessarily true, they were still quite adept at lane splitting but mostly due to putting the fear of god into the car drivers 🤣
