I just got a renewal letter from Bennetts and it's gone up from £107 last year to £172 this year, despite no claims, no accidents and no other changes. I can't help but feel this is taking the piss. Is this a standard pre-amble to a bit of negotiation, reflective of policy increases across the board or should I just sack them off and look elsewhere? MCE seem to come up cheapest.

There's something weird going on with insurance, that seems to be the general tenor, they are all set up to compete for initial business then rack up the fees later. You've no alternative but to sack them off and 'go compare' or whatever, then check the cover, you don't always get what you need.

Just had a renewal notice for the car and it’s come down 10% from last year, again nothing’s changed. I use a broker though, and I assume they do the leg-work for me to get the best deal. Motorbike was roughly the same as last year, as I recall.

Comparison every time and if they won’t match the best - move.

ive had the same company come back as the cheapest before despite a renewal hike!

lure you in with a good price the first year, then hope you will bend over and take the renewal price without lube.

some sort of comparison website every time ftw

Brokers for general insurance are like an analog version of a comparison site, but you don’t have to do anything at all. Just let them find stuff for you.

They are great, and you don’t pay for them either so it’s a win all round.

Same price as direct (or cheaper) and the insurer pays an actual person the commission, rather than it going to fund a free meerkat and loads of TV advertising etc.

Could I hijack slightly? I got my renewal in and said to myself I'll need to have a scout about for a better price, promptly forgot until the documents landed the other day. Suck it up or is it worthwhile hunting around during the term of the cover?

most of my insurance comes in lower each year.

Motorbike insurance I have found Hastings best value.

Another vote for Hastings, always come out pretty cheap with decent cover and will do tricky bikes like enduro etc.
