Seems I'm suffering from a common Triumph problem, a knackered regulator/rectifier. Can anybody tell me if a faulty reg/rec would get hot (mine is), and is it a sign of problems if the wiring to it is getting very warm??

My Daytona had similar problems.

I think the Reg/Rect will get hot in normal operation - the wiring getting hot is because Triumph spec wire that is a bit on the light side for the currents involved. I applied the modification described here: linky and it seemed to help things a lot (wires cool and charging voltage up from 12.9 -> 13.7 or so, from memory).

Yes it may melt and there is a fire risk eventually.

Overcharging may cause rotten egg smell from battery. Bulbs may blow.

Stick a voltmeter on the batteryy to se what you are getting. more than 14 you should be concerned.

Mine was making 19 volts and ended up quite crispy.

They often fail because of corroded plugs in the circuit. It's worth having a look at the plugs between the regulator and the alternator, chances are they're corroded. If you just replaced the regulator you may still have the problem.
