Quick query. I am contemplating possibly maybe dabbling with a motorbike. I passed my car test back in -redacted-,definitely before 2001. So my licence shows an A next to the motorbike symbol. So does that mean I can just ride a bike without taking a test or doing CBT? I have looked online but it is confusing to say the least. Any pointers/experience?

I hasten to add I would do training even if it wasn't compulsory!

Youll need a CBT. The car pass doesn’t entitle you to a motorbike - category A now if you haven’t passed your motorbike test.

Car pass only entitles you to ride a moped (50cc) without L Plates

https://www.gov.uk/motorcycle-cbt/car-driving-licence

I passed bike test 1987. Car test 1988.

Unless of course your license really does say category A entitlement and DVlA have screwed up

Edit. Looked at license. Mrs SSS just renewed hers. She has Category A on hers with code 79(3). Which means it’s no engine size restriction for tricycles ONlY. So you can drive a reliant robin or converted motorbike trike. NOT a motorcycle

no. It means you can ride a moped not a motorcycle IIRC

I passed all mine in the early nineties but didn't category A used to allow you to ride up to a 125 as long as you passed a Part 1 within a certain time?

Yeah, it's confusing, and obviously things will be different now no matter what's on your license I'd have thought.

Just spotted code 79(3) which is "restricted to tricycles". So I think CBT/Theory/test us still required.

I passed my car test in 1989 and got my motorbike A licence in 2018.

I had to complete the CBT, theory, hazard perception, MOD 1 and MOD 2 to get it. So no shortcuts, unfortunately.

Aye, go for it, what's the worst that could happen! By way of total coincidence I am selling a Kawasaki ZZR1400, that's the perfect starter bike!.....I'll get my coat!

Yep, and not only do you need CBT, theory, and the mod 1 & mod 2 tests if you want to ride anything other than a 125cc on L plates, to be able to ride anything over 125cc on L plates on the road, you must be riding with an instructor, so you can't do any practice on your own or with a mate. So you're looking at about £1000+ for a Direct access course, normally 5 days long.

However it does entitle you to hire 500cc maxi scooters in Ibiza😜

Sure I read somewhere that travel insurance companies would only pay out for motor bike / scooter accidents if you held the relevant UK license.
