You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
OK, so following on from VFR thread a week or so back, a couple of mentions of a Triumph Sprint on there made me look ... and after much looking, head scratching and general procrastination, looks like I've got a Sprint 955i, v low miles, pretty mint to pick up Monday.
Son and I are then off to Europe mid-week so a bit of a gamble ... I'll be doing about 5-600 miles on Mon/Tues so it'll have a bit of a run. But quite excited.
Any pointers - it doesn't have luggage rack/panniers so I'll be using soft panniers and bungee stuff to back seat (unless anyone's got a top box rack?!).
So what should I look for/check/know about with these Triumphs?
Cheers
I have the later Sprint ST 1050, mine is a 2005 model I've had since new. I've been to Europe a few times on it, solo and with a pillion. It's a fantastic mile munching touring bike. It's very comfortable and I have done 6 or 7 hundred mile days with nothing other than an occasional leg stretch and been fine at the end of it.
I have the hard Triumph panniers which are a bit of an odd shape inside which somewhat limits their carrying capacity and also makes the bike a bit wide for filtering. I also have a Givi top box which is superb and makes my wife feel a lot more secure on pillion when used as a back rest. I have however done as you plan and just used soft luggage bungeed on the seat and a tank bag when traveling solo. Secondhand Baglux tank covers and bags are often availble quite cheaply for older bikes on Ebay.
No major issues, with mine. A scotoiler makes the chain last forever and eliminates the need to manually lube it. Heated grips are nice in the winter (I have after market ones on mine). Dunno about the 955 but the headlight is pretty useless on mine, not so much of an issue with summer touring though. Other than that it has no real vices. Enjoy your trip.
Go and enjoy it, no worries with either the 955 or 1050. Carry a small can of chain oil and lube regularly.
Have a great time, got the hard panniers on mine so can't help with that aspect.
Scottoiler, sheer brilliance for keeping your chain lubed and lasting longer. Look at getting led headlight conversion. I had a daytona 955i, great engine 😁
