A bit further north than Merseyside but a few mates that are novices at trials have been here and had a great time.

Can't help with the Merseyside location but..... hope you find somewhere and enjoy it.

My son (as a schoolboy) and I did it for a number of years... the trials riding community were just great in every respect, helped with bikes, repairs, coaching.

I was going to suggest Inch Perfect. I fancy a day with my son next spring. I did once flirt with the idea of pre-65 trials as my dad had a suitable twin-shock BSA in the garage gathering dust but by the time I’d thought to give it a go, he’d sold it!

Edit, Masterdabber, presume you scored a lot of 5s! 😂😂😂

LOL.... My son gave me the handle "Masterdabber" when we ran the website for Surrey Schoolboys Trials Club.... he thought I was particularly good at dabbing.🤔😅

I know there’s a Frodsham club and trials there but I suspect it’s own equipment

I went to Inch Perfect about 6 months ago and loved it. First time on a trials bike and we rode the electric ones all day. I was allowed to finish the day on the instructors bike as I was the "star pupil". Their words not mine.

If you've done any DH riding or you generally ride steep, tech trails on a mountain bike you'll find a lot of the body language is very similar.

I've been obsessed with getting a bike ever since and I've discovered loads of nearby places to go for a play.

I'm in the middle of a van conversion but then I might go bike shopping. I'm dying for another go at it.

Ahh memories!
I rode for about 15 years waay back in the 70'/80's. Just wish I'd kept it up but being self employed screwed that idea.

This is the only photo I have of me riding, taken from a 35mm slide.

Riding this.

Anyway, OP. I'd give someone like Inch Perfect a go before you go mad. As long as you don't do anything daft, then I'd look at joining a club, (you'll not improve if you just fanny around in an old quarry) then you can enter comps. Don't forget you'll need an ACU licence to compete in any trial.
This might be a good site to have a gander at, they've got a big following. https://www.trialscentral.com/

Good luck & enjoy!

@Esselgruntfuttock.
Did they give you a five for not smoking a fag in that section?

I’ve done a couple of days with Stu Day at TrialsDay

He’s a great guy and a good teacher. We rode Beta and GasGas bikes. Stu’s family own a large farm and we spent the day riding on their land.

Check them out, they may be a bit closer to you.

Depending on the age of your son, I might have met you at some point as I used to ride with SSTC when I was younger. We used to have an event a year on the land my Dad farmed - Hall Farm (near Alton).

Is your dad called Julian? My son's name is Ben Jordan (36).   I remember riding there.

Yes, good memory. He’s just retired and relinquished the farm tenancy.

I’m 35 so probably did ride at the same time as your son.

You definitely did Olii. I remember you. Neither Ben or me ride trials anymore. Ben rode cycle trials events for a while after the motorbike trials and now rides mtb and races sometimes.  I was a roadie but now ride mtb.  Good to bump into you again.

please remember us to Julian.

OP, sorry for the thread diversion.

Yes, I remember Ben and you now. I’ve still got the Beta Techno (probably almost a classic now!) and potter around occasionally but haven’t ridden a trial for years. I’d love to ride again but I seem to have too many interests and not enough time…

I’ll mention this to my dad, I’m sure he’ll enjoy this recollection.
