If you were in the position of having £12-15,000 to spend on vehicles what would you do?
Currently in two minds-
1. Buy a motorbike and a car- I fancy something fun so the motorbike would cover this and then a boring white goods diesel workhorse for bikes and the commute.
2. Buy a nicer car- Get a car that is interesting and a bit faster but also practical- maybe a German estate.
Really not sure what to do.
If you have to ask that question then you need to hand your bike license back.......
What he said 😛
My heart says bike and car but head says nicer car.
Guess the other question would be what bike.. it would be used for the odd 70 mile commute and then just fun- going to wales, maybe Europe and a track day or two. I've only got experience of the MT-07 and that was a lovely bike. Always liked the idea of an R6. Budget for the bike around £5,000.
£15k? For that I could buy the two cars and a van that I already own and have £5k left to spend on bicycles.
Surely you can manage to find a bike and a German estate for £12-15k?
Why does he need to hand his licence back? I have a full bike licence but don't currently have a motorbike or any desire to own one right now.

Do you like pain? I mean the kind of pain broken bones and sharp objects inflict? You'll love an R6 then 😛
From an MT-07 I'd suggest the Honda CB650, CBR600F, ER650, perhaps Z750/Z800 even.
I'd put my money an the Z800 - lovely bike with the best engine of any of those without the arse up/head down of the R6.
Onzadog - if you have to ask that question - then you should do the same....
Hammy, just the bike licence or my das instructors licence as well?

Choose the bike based on the one you'd be riding every day, not the occasional ride.
And one of these; my last 'commuter'. Safe, solid and fast.

In this day and age, I'd hand back my bike license, haven't ridden since an Audi TT pulled out on me on the A53 5 years ago.
Car, nice. Not to be seen in same sentence.
Its a 4 wheeled thing to get you from A to B when its raining or you have the family.
To suggest that a nice car (if it exists) comes from Germany is really pushing it. Estate agent by any chance or does the wife has aspirations? 😆
Yeah, stories like that (^) make me think with my head & ignore my heart.
Could also get some sort of Caterham/kit car at a stretch. I'll have a garage to store the bike or kit car in too.
I'm a single 24 year old and work in IT, so neither a wife nor an estate agent 😆
Ignore the car, just get a bike. Or several bikes!
Have been fortunate enough to be in the same situation and go down both routes.
Nice car hmmm personally after a while I find them all pretty much the same esp in traffic and Open Road opportunities seem few and far between it depends where you live and how far you're prepared to drive to enjoy it
Motorbikes well even a ride round the block is a bit special and an actual proper ride unbeatable imo
Started buying dull workmanlike cars and nice motorbikes in the late 90s and have been that way ever since
Yeah, the number of times I've been in my car and seen some bikers filtering or overtaking me before heading off into the distance and I've just craved it. I did my DAS on the MT-07 and had a 125cc for a year and a bit. There's not really any cars that can match the feeling of excitement in my budget.
Bike+car, obviously. Or just the bike. Although I will admit the thought of winter riding isn't particularly appealing right now.
Bike & Car - Best of both worlds - Bike riding in the dry and car for when its cold and wet 😆
1199 panigale and a piece of rubbish car.
Good textiles and the right underlayers and unless it really is biblically horrific - theres no need to stop riding.
Have both Exo2 and Keis heated kit - makes -10c comfortable.
Only bad snow really stops me - but then I can always get the CRF450R out seeing as its road legal (if I don't cave and sell it_)
I recently spent a similar amount on a car, purely because I'm at a point in my life where I don't have the time to fettle with cars.
Otherwise it would have been a significantly smaller amount spent on a car and the rest on coke and hookers as I have no bike license. If I had lots of time to fettle with cars and to play in them, it would have been a fun car and a sensible big car.
You should get the bike and cheaper car.
Thanks for all the input!
I think I'm going to go bike and car.
I'm confident doing all (or most) of the maintenance on the bike. I did everything on the 125 including a clutch change. Surprisingly easy and satisfying. I've got the time, space and money at the moment to enjoy toys so I guess a bike is a logical choice.
I'll then spend the rest on some mundane diesel box- Kia Ceed or something? I need it to be reliable and fairly new.
Definitely bike + car.
Coincidentally my bike is for sale - sounds like it fits your bike needs bang on (and one of the recommendations of hammyuk). CBR600f dec13/63 with 6k. Pampered and loaded with extras. And within your budget.

Good man!
Bike's are still pretty easy to work on although some are easier than others. With a lot of fully faired bikes half the work is getting to where you need to do the job.
Invest some of that cash in tools, manuals and trackstands or a lifting platform (if you don't already have) and then your maintenance will be easier and more enjoyable.
Crikey!
Tiger 800XCX, new.
Mondeo diesel estate 4-5 years old.
Sorted.
Can I change my suggestion?
2 BIKES!!
A WR450 or similar enduro bike and a Daytona 675r. Perfect pair right there!
£4k on a bike, get a low tuned 1 litre bike and it'll keep you entertained for years and the used prices are alot better than sub litre bikes.
£7-8k on a good condition petrol german estate car with 6 cylinders, spend the change on the minor extra running costs. You can get a good e91 325i for that.
Personally I run a 335D and a cheapo Yamaha FZ1. I'd like a more 'fancy' bike than the FZ1 but the reality is it can easily keep up with modern higher power bikes on a track day and they amazing value used.
Only just come across this thread. Is this why you're selling all your MTB's?
Anyway... My 2 penneth...
Been there, done that with bikes myself. To a point... That point was that I realised to enjoy them, I was doing stupid things, any speed under 120mph felt boring, and I was gonna hurt myself or worse any time soon. Haven't been on one properly (save for taking a mates round the block once or twice) in 10 years. Do I miss it? Occasionally yeah, and don't get me wrong I still think about getting one every so often, but if I did, it would be something raw and visceral, something without a fairing but a big torquey engine, think Ducati Monster or original 1200 Bandit or the like. £2k should pick you up a decent one of either... They're bikes you can enjoy at near legal speeds that make a lot of noise, and to be honest, that's kinda what it's about. A new R1 or BMW 1000SRR is going to be an absolute weapon, but one that's totally pointless on the UK's roads unless you don't mind being relieved of your license very soon or ending up in a coffin!
As for cars, well... Buy something half decent by all means, but the roads are generally too congested to enjoy them, or the cars are generally too boring/safe/homogenised to exploit on the roads anyway. I've got a 10yr old BMW 330D now, which is a great car, does everything I want it to and it doesn't hang about. Won't set my pants on fire either, but then in reality neither would an M3 compared to a bike and I know the M3 would cost a hell of a lot more to run!
I get WAY more enjoyment out of bikes I can pedal these days, even road bikes (heaven forbid) than I do out of anything with an engine. I know I own a shop, but genuinely all my spare cash goes on bikes and kit too anyway. I can get a real thrill out of riding bikes, and I won't lose my license! But then you already know that as you've got a few yourself... So... Go ride your bikes, stop looking for ways to blow your money. When the right reason presents itself, you'll wish you had that £15k you'd blown frivolously in your pocket still!*
*says me, who at your age would have probably blown most of the budget on a missile of a motorbike and a luxo barge of a car at the same time... That's the beauty of age and hindsight! 😉
